4.4 Schools shaping each other – School Partnerships & eTwinning by Teacher Academy

Does your school have partnerships with other schools? If so, how have these shaped/changed your school? Can schools in other countries working in very different contexts really contribute to your own schools development? How can your own school help other schools? What local schools can you partner with? Reflect on these questions and share your reflections in the Padlet below.

More and more Italian schools have been involved in projects and our students have visited other countries. In my school we have links with a French secondary school and our students ( not many) have been to France and also worked in France. What we are going to do now is to try to offer opportunities for having training abroad but our students need to have a B1 level in English. We would also like to have more partnerships with other schools but it is not easy. Ideally I would like to work on the E-twinning but I feel that I am alone and this makes me feel a bit worried about the idea of starting the project.
I must add that I have been working in my school since September and I still need to learn more about the dynamics and what the other teachers want to do. As regards the teacher development we are now working with other schools and professional development is shared among the teachers working and living in the same area.

Our school has got strong partnerships with other secondary schools in the region, belonging to the same regional school’s community. We organize meetings/ad hoc working groups for specific target groups at a regular basis: pupil counsellors, coordinators cross-curricular attainment targets, ICT-coordinators, leaders cross-school prevention projects (about drugs, social media, alcohol…), …

We, as a middle school, the stage in between primary and upper secondary education, also partner with the last stage of primary schools. We organize reciprocal job shadowing or guest- and co-teaching in order to facilitate the transition from primary to secondary education for the pupils.

Schools in other countries, working in different contexts, surely can contribute to our own school development. Similarities as well as differences can be very inspiring to discuss and come to a solution for a problem in the own school. We have been involved in 2 Comenius school development projects about cooperative learning and managing and autonomous learning. They were really professional development opportunities for our colleagues. Since the beginning of eTwinning, we have developed several eTwinning projects with different European schools about different topics: culture @ school, WWI, going to school in a world city/in a small town, ...

The eTwinning PDW and online learning events are great opportunities for professional development for the colleagues.

But the most important reason of the project is to keep the national identity in harmony with the consciousness of members of the European Communities and of the whole world. Promoting national identity and culture of each country involved in the project, motivating students to participate more actively in school and extracurricular activities, promoting and improving digital literacy, development of communication skills in English, both for students and for teachers are also some of this project’s main purposes. I think that these projects helped shape a vision and thus, school's development.

My school has been involved in several e-twinning projects. The participation in these projects allowed students to participate in a different type of activity, different from the traditional one, which required them to engage, research, investigate, collaborate with each other. As a result of this project, we found an improvement of the teacher-student relations, student-pupils, as well as an increase of the pupils learning process, by carrying out more extra-curricular activities. These projects helped to form a vision and, therefore, to develop the school.

The teachers can know about other schools only if they have friends from there or some teachers had visited other European countries and told about those schools. Grammar schools don't want to share ideas because they want to be the only ones which are successful in teaching foreign languages. Not sure whether we could be partners with other school in my area. We happened to meet within a KA2 project and the feelings were really strong :) This year I was tranfered to a new school and unfortunately the school's culture does not incline towards projects... thankfully, students really liked the project and believed it was something of their own! I hope irritation (if not indifference) levels will lower and interest will rise and shine! Locally we have partners working in a net of schools in Greece on the same project, and this really helps increasing skills of collaboration and working together! Yet, there're a lot to be done, since this is only the beginning!

We have accepted teachers for job shadowing and we have developed a network with other european schools. Both students and teachers that have been involved have had a great experience. We have exchanged ideas and good practices with our partners and we have learnt a lot. Some of us we are not the same teachers, as we used to be, after this interaction.

At local level my school is part of network with other schools for teacher professional development. We also establish an informal network with experience for example regarding e twinning projects or other interesting activities in which each school is involved. First of all I would say that by the great collaboration wiyh other schools in Europe, thanks to Erasmus and eTwinning our school has changed and innovated its organization. Moreover the partnership with local school is helpful to open the school to better opportunities.

Our school has been taking part in eTwinning projects since 2014. We have also taken up on an Erasmus KA219 project (2016-2018). After started working on them the school gained recognition in the local community due to the dissemination of our activities. The students have responded very well to the perspective of meeting and working with students of other countries on the same subject, they have learnt new tools and teaching methods. The teachers on the other hand learnt to collaborate with colleagues from other countries, explored different educational systems and curricula and more important, they learnt to embrace diversity in education and beliefs as well as showing tolerance to different ideas. The exchange of practices and ideas took a further step to examine the possibility of student exchanges between eTwinning partner schools. Of course the benefits of working with schools from another country were most visible in the case of the Erasmus. A very positive aspect of this international dimension is that more colleagues from our school were motivated to start eTwinning projects themselves.

Apart from international projects we are also taking part in national projects such as Teachers4Europe Ambassadors, which is about a network of teachers promoting European Projects in the classroom and also European Parliament School Ambassadors, a project running in 7 European Countries so far, promoting the values of parliamentary democracy and emphasizing in the contribution of the European Parliament to the life of a European citizen. Dealing with all these projects has enabled openness both to local community and beyond, because in some of the projects we also work with other schools on national level. What’s more our school is acting as an ambassador in our municipality and many teachers from other schools are interested in getting informed about various European projects by us.

It has been a wonderful experience for teacher, but especialy for students. Most of them never get out of Portugal... and they work very hard in the project. However to make the selection we have some problems... not because they are to many, but because most of students did not believe in the project and others thought they will have to much work... so they are not interested... also said ... as they had to work out of the class schedual... it will be to much.... so , in the end we catch a group o 18 students that have been working hard... For them it was very interesting the mobility to Italy, it was the first time they are in contact with diferents school systems, new culture... This project has been also an example for all school that is possible to do this kind of projects.
My school has partnerships with other schools. These partnerships have brought tremendous change in the mentality and operation way of teachers participating in these imitatives. School partners can indeed contribute to our school’s development. We can help other schools because we currently present a worst case scenario and I believe that we can benefit by analyzing the factors that bring us in this position. As we have done in the past we can partner with schools in or area, district and beyond.
