Join me as I explore various ways to craft a mashup between two or more existing pieces of music. I'll be posting my plans and reasoning behind them here.

Mashup project idea

My idea for the main project is to showcase a series of music mashups, and the creation process behind them. Part-education, part-performance.

It relates to my songwriting practice in the sense that understanding song structure is integral when making music with a larger appeal in mind. In theory the larger the appeal, the higher the profit - it also trains your brain to notice patterns in songs more often and increases your ability to blend genres together, crafting new styles and even subgenres altogether.

I see a lot of mashups popping up on YouTube often, with particularly strong interest from fans of alternative / niche artists. Smaller yet dedicated fanbases will be my target demographic here, so this will influence which songs I choose to mashup.

It could also relate to areas other than songwriting, such as production and performance. Some of the mashups I'll be recording live, some of them I'll be making in a DAW, so these areas are already being directly referenced.

I plan on doing two-three videos talking about different kinds of mashups, with either one big mashup or two smaller mashups featured in each video.

I'll hopefully be able to share these videos to YouTube, even though it has been temperamental the last few times I've tried to do that. If that doesn't work, there's always the backup files in the OneDrive.

Working on a mashup for a potential video about DAWs. Important to show the audience something that I myself have made to show that even with just a laptop and a piece of software, you can be creative in this way.

This will help my audience grow from people interested in a niche into a large collective of people coming to my videos for education and examples of people achieving great results without being blessed with massive amounts of talent.

The two songs being put together here are Lostmyhead by The 1975, and How Can I Make It Ok by Wolf Alice.

Reference point for the tone of the series.

Going to take a lot of inspiration from the Urban Rescue Ranch YT channel. Wildly different field of expertise, but the tone of the videos and the way they're shot with quick cut clips shot on portable cameras / phones is feasible to emulate with my own videos.

The tone is informative, yet also with a heavy focus on capturing moments as they happen and also injecting humour into most scenes.

Humour is going to be important for me to keep people drawn in to the niche that is music mashups. Instead of being an advertisement / tutorial, I want it to be entertaining. I want people to look forward to an upload to brighten up their day, and humour is the easiest and most effective way to achieve this.

I plan on making something akin to this - between 5-10 different songs played acoustically by myself, and picking songs from varying genres and artists.

The positive reactions from the crowd throughout this video say it all - people like a positive surprise. From making a video like this, I expect to see comments from other users requesting songs to try to mash together. This would boost viewer interaction, and would therefore make it much easier to monetise videos.

After that, i will be making my own medley of songs that I think go well together.

It's important to make reference to other artists, because it shows your audience that you're aware of the industry and who is/was relevant within it.

I believe this to be the process that Urban Rescue Ranch uses to film their videos, so it should also suit for mine as I'm chasing a similar tone.
