-colonial mansion
-isolated countryside estate
-big, airy room with yellow wallpaper

The narrator's obsessed with the wallpaper even though in the beginning she simply describes it as a hideous and the worst wallpaper, the more she stays in the room the more her fascination with the hideous wallpaper grows.

The setting adds to the theme by creating a perfect environment for the story because it provided an isolated area, if not for this area she wouldn't have had the lack of stimulation The description of the room with the yellow wallpaper shows the changing of her mind in the story going from "The color is repellent, almost revolting..." (36) to becoming more interested and obsessive over it, "The front pattern DOES move—and no wonder" (180) which shows the change to her mental state as time goes on in that room.

Speaker is a woman that is away during the summer with her husband. She is a writer that has an active imagination and needs to feel secure in her surroundings. Later turns this into obsession in her isolation because she is treated like a child by her husband. The tone of this story is anxious, this contributes to the story's theme by showing the effects of the mental mind after restriction of imagination.

Imagery- garden seen as mysterious, wallpaper-hatred for it

room- how seen before and after.
Contributes to the theme by showing a vivid picture for audience as she goes mad.

irony-thought room was for children when it was used for mental patients,John is doctor but makes her more sick, etc.
Adds to the idea of ignorance and taking the wrong path leading to possible insanity.

Simile-"Creeping as fast as a cloud shadow in a high wind"
curves in the wallpaper as "committing suicide"
Again brings the reader's attention back to the anxious feelings that the speaker is having which goes back the theme of the effects of restrictions and ignorance.
