Who?

The countries that were in the war were; UK, USA, USSR, Germany, France, Italy, the Ottoman empire, the Austro-Hungarian empire, and Bulgaria.

Where?
It started in the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo as an assassination, where Gavrilo Princip stood in the middle of the street waiting for the convoy to pass by with a gun in his hand. He then shot the archduke and his wife in the convoy.

The war happened in south eastern Europe, then escalated to the rest of Europe, then the rest of the World was involved, but mainly the above mentioned Countries.

What?
After this assassination, Austria was outrageous, so they officially declared war between themselves and Serbia by invading Serbia and fighting the Battle of Cer and the Battle of Kolubara which began on the 12th of august 1914, Serbia had lost this battle and suffered from great losses.

When?
The world war Started on the 28th of July 1914, and ended on the 11th of November 1918 

Why?
A young Serbian named Gavrilo Princip assassinated Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria During his visit to Bosnia. This triggered the war by enraging Austria.

How?

Nationalism: What is nationalism? Nationalism is seeing the interests of your country as far more superior interests than other countries, the definition of nationalism is pretty self explanatory about why it influenced the outbreak of the first war, the countries were filled with wrath and acted supercilious to other nations, especially Austria, they even caused a whole World War over the death of one guy, which seems to be a clear over-reaction about this incident.

Alliances: Alliances are primarily defined as promises between countries, the ones that were in the first world war like the Alliance between Germany and Austria are labelled as Military alliances, alliances can be between 2 countries or more. Nationalism was a great cause of World War one because of countries being greedy and not negotiating. Nationalism shows you are proud of your country and want it to be the best. A lot of causes all linked back to countries all wanted to be better than each other. Nationalist groups in Austria-Hungary and Serbia wanted independence. France wanted Alsace Lorraine back from Germany who was lost in 1871 Franco-Prussian war. The use of Nationalism gave nations false hope and aggressive to win the war. Even if they weren’t able to win a war due to their strength and understanding of plans and leaders. This leads to Imperialism. As you can see Nationalism had made a big dent in Countries understanding and strength of war. Also how different countries wanted land to help their plan succeed in winning the war. These feelings all helped extend the war by making negotiations to end it less desirable due to the possible appearance of weakness. Key points

An alliance is an agreement made between two or more countries to give each other help if it is needed. When an alliance is signed, those countries become known as Allies. A number of alliances had been signed by countries between the years 1879 and 1914. These were important because they meant that some countries had no option but to declare war if one of their allies. declared war first. By 1914, the six major powers of Europe were split into two alliances that would form the two warring sides in World War I. Britain, France, and Russia formed the Triple Entente, while Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy joined in the Triple Alliance. What is nationalism?
Nationalism is an extreme form of patriotism and it's placing the interests of their own country above the interests of other countries.

How could this have caused WW1?
Nationalism increases and develops country's overconfidence and pride later on 
producing a policy of national independence or separatism.
Meanwhile in the early 1900s this nationalism created a fierce competition and rivalry between Europe’s powers. These powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, and France. In order to be the greatest of the great nations, the nation would have to be the best at everything- both militarily and economically.
Economically there was a high-paced competition over the supply of resources which was a major reason for the hatred and tension between the countries as Africa had most of these resource sites causing a dispute over the possession/control of the Suez Canal which was the main port and  source of import to all the resources,economically there was also a strong competition over being rich in natural resources- such as rubber, gold and diamonds.
However because of the need for national security and pride, territories were very important and eventually this became a huge aspect and cause of WW1 and this is were alliances came to play Austria-Hungary and Russia, at this time, were both trying to dominate in the Balkans. Within the Balkans were many groups of Serbs, Bulgarians, Romanians who were all looking forward to independency and starting their own country by their own will.In this case Serbia was sided with Russia, Serbia wished to form one large nation with all of the Slavs but Austria-Hungary, unwilling to let Serbia extend its borders, tried to stop these efforts. It feared that efforts to create a Slavic state would bring about a rebellion.
Eventually, the different nationalities grew to hate one another. The Serbians wanted to take away Bosnia and Herzegonina, and Austria-Hungary wanted to crush any Serbian effort to take over. This eventually led to the shooting of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which created a great effect. The Russians came in to help the Serbians and the other alliances came in for a full-fledged world war.
Last but not least european powers all wanted to get in, some by playing on the nationalism of the Balkans.  To do so, and to isolate France, Bismarck made alliances with potential enemies Austria and Russia.Such as:

  • Three Emperors’ League (1873-78): Russia, Germany, and Austria, to balance Russia and Austria’s conflict over the Balkans.
  • Dual Alliance with Austria (1879).
  • Triple Alliance: with Austria and Italy (1882-1914)
  • Reinsurance treaty (1887): secret treaty with Russia.

How did nationalism effect World War 1?
Much of the origin of the war was based on the desire of Slavic peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina to no longer be part of Austria Hungary but instead be part of Serbia. In this way, nationalism led directly to the War. But more generally, nationalism in various countries throughout Europe contributed not only to the beginning but the extension of the war in Europe. Each country tried to prove their dominance and power.

Due to the direct assassination towards Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife at Sarajevo when a young Serbian Nationalist had murdered the two.
