We have very limited facts in this case and it would be easy to jump to conclusions but actually need to use some of these facts to ask further questions and identify what is going on. We know that this is Stephanie’s first baby and that she went home 24hours after the birth. We know that she missed the newborn check and when attending the house the babies room has been soundproofed. Her husband Philip has been looking for work after leaving the army and we know Stephanie has been crying.

We need to establish why Stephanie missed the check, if there is a reason she is crying – this could be for many reasons. We need to understand why the room has been soundproofed and if they are using a baby monitor and if Arabella’s needs are being met.

There are potentially issues of maternal and paternal mental health. There could be unemployment and money worries. We need to understand Philip and Stephanies’s parenting style and their understanding of a child’s needs. We need to be aware why Stephanie is crying – has something happened? It is possible she was watching a sad film – we need to not jump to conclusions but it also could be a sign of her ill health, lack of sleep or issues within the relationship. Are there any underslying issues with Philips discharge from the Army – why was he medically discharged is it physical ill health or MH – is he getting any support?

I feel I could assess both Stephanie and Philips MH - I already work with the vereans service nationslly with patients so could engage with that. I am also aware of safeguarding processes. My area where I would not have as much confidence are the physical health of Arabella and how to identify if there are issues. I have had four children so have experience but as a MH nurse I haven’t studied child development in much depth
