It is the largest human waste dump in the world.

Its located in the center of the Northern Pacific Ocean.

How did this giant area of trash form?

The trash came from industries dumping their waste into the ocean. They dump it right in the center.

The upper part of Hawaii, is where warm water from the South Pacific crashes into cooler water from the north. This is where all of the trash collects together.

The garbage is mainly made up of plastic. It isn't biodegradable so it barely breaks down , it just keeps collecting into smaller pieces.

What is being done to clean up this mess?

People are going in teams to help clean up the

mess. It's slowly but surely being lifted

out of the oceans. The solution to the problem is not to dump all of the trash into the ocean, instead they need to dump it on land.
