The biggest dovecote in US history Adam Raphael Thursday 16 October 1969 07.39 EDT First published on Thursday 16 October 1969 07.39 EDT Washington, October 15 Vietnam Moratorium Day lived up to its advanced billing as the most widespread demonstration for peace in America's history as hundreds of thousands joined in demonstrations, rallies, teach-ins, and every conceivable form of political protest throughout the nation today. Senators McCarthy, Kennedy, Church, McGovern, and other leading doves stumped the country pleading for an end to the war. It was not a day of confrontation. It was a day of preaching to the converted, and the demonstrations, which had the support of 80 Senators and Congressmen, were mostly all peaceful in spite of underlying passions. The only violence occurred in front of the White House this afternoon when a group of 20 young 'black' militants, carrying a mock coffin and a Vietcong flag, tried to force their way into the grounds. Police moved in with clubs and there was a short fist-swinging melee before the 75-strong crowd was dispersed. In Detroit, there was also a minor incident when demonstrators and hecklers tossed rocks and bottles at each other, and in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, a fire destroyed military service records. In New York Mayor Lindsay, fighting for re-election, told a thousand-strong cheering crowd that the Nixon Administration's Vietnam policy was on "a dangerously self-defeating course."In Chicago the eight radicals charged with inciting a riot at last year's Democratic national convention and their lawyers wore black arm bands in court today to mark the moratorium. But a US marshal confiscated a Vietcong flag which the yippie leader, Abble Hoffman, one of the defendants, tried to bring into the court. After the morning session, a crowd estimated at more than 10,000, gathered in Chicago's civic centre to hear another of the defendants, David Dellinger, praise "the tremendous surge of anti-war sentiment." The, chanting "Peace now, peace now," the crowd observed a minute's silence, many with hands raised in a "V" sign for peace.AdvertiseIn Boston the economist and former US Ambassador, Mr John Kenneth Galbraith, told a crowd of more than a thousand that the ending of the war now would bring the US military establishment under control. In Washington, where protest meetings were held in several Government executive offices, President Nixon worked in his White House office all day, while opposing bands of pickets - for and against the moratorium - paraded peacefully outside. Card burnedPolice managed to prevent a band of 100 Administration supporters, led by a fundamentalist radio preacher, the Rev Carl MacIntyre, from marching on a guerrilla theatre performance outside the military draft headquarters, near the White House, where 3,000 demonstrators watched a draft card being burned over a flag-draped coffin. Harsher words were exchanged in Congress, where an attempt by critics of the war to keep the House in session all night, was foiled by opponents passing an adjournment motion. Tempers were quickened by Vice-President Agnew's demand for supporters of the moratorium to repudiate a letter from the North Vietnamese Prime Minister, Pham Van Dong, acclaiming their struggle against "US aggression." Senator McCarthy today accused Mr Agnew of preparing for an Administration attempt to discredit the moratorium as Communist inspired. The moratorium leaders were also quick to issue a statement saying: "It is regrettable that the Administration would seize this straw in an attempt to discredit the patriotism of those millions of Americans who sincerely desire peace. Vice-President Agnew's remarks, however, undoubtedly hit on the weakest spot of the moratorium - the gaping differences of opinion among those taking part. Though all may be for an end to war, the demonstrators range from the peace-with-honour brigade to those who want an unconditional acceptance of all the Vietcong's demands. Leading articles in newspapers throughout the United States today also showed deeply divided opinions. Though many state that President Nixon blundered when he said at his press conference last month that he would "under no circumstances be affected whatever" by the moratorium, many support his policy of gradual withdrawal. The "New York Times," however, gives the moratorium qualified approval so long as it points to constructive policy. The "New York Daily News," on a very different tack, says that the moratorium has been "snapped up, amplified, and financed by kooks, reds, dupes, and, a few idealists. "

A peaceful march - except in Grosvenor Square
Monday 28 October 1968 05.02 EST

First published on Monday 28 October 1968 05.02 EST
Though three thousand chanting demonstrators surged into Grosvenor Square, London, yesterday, making repeated attempts to break the massive police cordon surrounding the United States Embassy, the major part of the student march protesting against the Vietnam war passed off peacefully. A Scotland Yard spokesman said early today that a total of 11 people had been arrested in incidents "directly or indirectly" connected with the demonstration. Of the arrests, 11 were made during the demonstration itself, and the other 30 in the West End of London . Eight policemen were taken to hospital.

The Home Secretary, Mr James Callaghan, arrived in Grosvenor Square last evening to watch the police gradually clear it of demonstrators. He was met by the Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Sir John Waldron, who had spent most of the afternoon among his men in the Square.

The major section of the marchers, estimated at about thirty thousand, continued along their proclaimed route to Hyde Park. On the way they handed in a petition to No.10 Downing Street, and after listening to speeches by their leaders, dispersed quietly.

In Grosvenor Square however, the breakaway element maintained constant assaults against the police cordon for four hours. At the height of the melee the police line nearly gave way, but it was immediately reinforced, and no demonstrators came nearer than 50 yards to the Embassy building.

During scuffles in which a police line in South Audley Street was broken through some of the demonstrators turned their banner stakes into spears, which they hurled at the police. Fireworks were constantly thrown, both into the crowds and into the police lines.

Last night, as the marchers retreated in front of the advancing police line, Grosvenor Square was a litter of lost shoes, broken glass, torn banners, and discarded clothing.

Haunted by Vietnam

Half a century later, readers recall the pain and destruction on the battlefield and off.
To the Editor: I will never forget the horrors of Vietnam (“The War That Killed Trust,” by Karl Marlantes, “Vietnam ’67” series, Sunday Review, Jan. 8).
Say what you want about Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy and their domino theories; it was Lyndon B. Johnson’s infamous Gulf of Tonkin speech in August 1964 that set the stage for lying about the war.
When I entered the University of Southern California two years later, I had to show several of my freshman classmates where the war zone was on a map. Vietnam fractured the American psyche. I ought to know. I “won” the first draft lottery on Dec. 1, 1969. Parents who had fought 25 years earlier in World War II couldn’t understand why their baby-boomer children argued about Vietnam at the dinner table.
As a 21-year-old at the time, I remember watching fathers throw their sons out of the house because they refused to enlist. But I did not serve in Vietnam. That’s because I had an accident a few years earlier that disqualified me.
Today, presidents and Congress must answer the question about the elusive end game before sending troops. No such questions were asked about Vietnam. Richard M. Nixon took credit for ending American involvement there, but it was Congress that pulled the plug on funding the war. Absent that, there is no telling when the killing in Vietnam would have ended.
My three children (36, 24 and 22) all know about Vietnam. I felt that it was my responsibility to pass on to them the lessons I learned nearly half a century ago. I hope that my contemporaries have done the same with their families.
DENNY FREIDENRICH
Laguna Beach, Calif.
To the Editor: Over a pay phone, my father told me never to talk to him about it again. I had told him that I was not going to Vietnam and that if drafted I was going to Canada. I was called a Communist and a traitor. After graduating from college in 1969 and moving to Canada that summer, I was never drafted. I became a Canadian citizen and have lived here ever since.
Karl Marlantes’s article resonated deeply with my experience growing up in Illinois during the 1950s and ’60s. The Vietnam War changed my life more than I ever expected, but I remain a wounded American at some level, too.
STEVE JOHNSON
Toronto
To the Editor: To this day, 50 years later, I can still see the verdant paddies and farmers planting their rice crop for the year. The green was so beautiful to behold. I still ask myself the same question I thought of back then: What are we doing here? These people just want to be left alone.
When will America apologize to the Vietnamese for the murder of their citizens? When will the military-industrial complex be held accountable for creating the weapons that helped destroy Laos and Vietnam? Creating a universal draft for the American military will help maintain high profits for the merchants of war.

In April of 1962, the 57th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) arrived in Vietnam with five UH-1 “Huey” helicopters. They took the call sign Dustoff. Over time the number of medevac detachments grew in Vietnam until the entire country had coverage and Dustoff became the universal call sign for all medevac missions.
A Dustoff crew consisted of four people: two pilots, a medic and a crew chief. Usually, one pilot would fly the helicopter while the other acted as the aircraft commander. The commander would navigate, monitor all of the radio transmissions, talk to the unit requesting the medevac and would take over flying if the pilot were injured. The medic kept the helicopter stocked with the necessary medical supplies and the crew chief would maintain the helicopter in top working condition. They would both load the patients onto the helicopter and the medic would administer any necessary medical treatment on the way to the hospital, often with the help of the crew chief. The medic and crew chief would stay with a particular helicopter while the pilots were interchangeable between helicopters. These crews saved many lives and were universally respected by all of the soldiers in the war.
