Perceptions and beliefs about learning and teaching have changed significantly from the 50s and 60s until today. Now, although the teaching profession is greatly underappreciated, it is one of the most important professions as it has the highest influence on a student's learning. It's important to reflect on what you are willing to do as a teacher to make yourself into a great teacher. I'll take time to reflect on what qualities I was "born with" but also what ones I want to work on more.

1) Teachers do a lot more than plan lessons, teach, and grade. They need to get to know how students develop socially, emotionally, physically, etc., and accommodate their classroom with all these factors in mind.

2) There are aspects of teaching that can be memorable and impactful for students. This can be good or bad depending on your personality, teaching style, and what you say/do in the classroom.

3) There are some qualities that good teachers are born with, depending on their personality and what is deemed to be fixed in a teacher's mind. However, throughout life, teachers can develop specific qualities, like good communication skills and connecting with others, that can help them become better teachers.

Some exit thoughts I'm having are that in order to be a good teacher I'll need to be prepared to adjust different lessons and ideas in the classroom that are more beneficial to my student's needs. After discussing what traits we think a good teacher has, I've come to realize I have control over the majority of the classroom climate. One trait we talked about was wanting to be there and enjoying what we're doing. I think if I come with a positive attitude it will create a better outcome after the learning process. Also I'm thinking about what we discussed at the beginning of the class in regards to how important a teacher is in a student's life and reflecting on how I will help my students and adjust to their needs.

Good teachers are teachers that have the ability to keep students attention on the topic and what they want to listen to as much as possible. This means being relatable and understanding of students to ensure that they want to be there and want to listen to you. This also means that it is our responsibility at teachers to be willing to change when our strategy or lesson is not working to ensure that the students have the best possible chance to learn and grow.

The fact that teachers are made, as opposed to being born, highlights the need for education courses and, ultimately, good teachers who have been made by the education system. However, one cannot ignore the qualities they were born with that may make them a good teacher. One's own biases that they were born with can shape the type of person they will become, which, in turn, changes the way they may perceive their students. I also think it is important to realize how much more than simple lesson plans a teacher is. They are role models and essentially a parent in the school setting.

Some of my main takeaways is a need to improve. With how I am right now, I feel I would be able to survive as a teacher. But I want more than that. I want to thrive as a teacher. Being able to have an amazing sense of work efficiency, being more personable, and being able to maintain classroom discipline in a fair way that allows students to still respect me while following my guidance.

Another key takeaway is the importance of the student and being able to see them as more than a mind to fill with knowledge. They have a life outside of school that can affect their performance in school.
