The importance of using global literature is crucial in the classroom. Global literature gives all students the ability to see themselves in a text. As Leland, Lewison, and Harste (2013) state, “Culturally authentic literature allows children to see themselves in a book” (p. 63). I have developed a specific lens for multicultural literature as the diversity in my school district grows. The books that I have chose for this inquiry represent different children from across the world. I currently have a student that is leaving for Morocco this summer to visit her family. The book Mirror will leave a lasting impression as students compare both cultures. Mirror, Genesha's Sweet Tooth, and Funny Bones will benefit all students as they listen and make connections. These diverse selections will also allow students to learn about one another. Juana and Lucas will spark student interest as we continue to read chapter books as a class. Some students will even relate and understand the Spanish words throughout the book. As kindergarten students, we can also understand the "pesky" English language. The Matchbox Diary and Goal! are both texts that can be used during shared reading. All of the selections above will make a differences within the personal lives of my students. As a teacher, I will continue to supplement diverse literature across the curriculum. Short, Day, and Schroeder (2016) once addressed, “The art of teaching means that we think about how to fulfill the curricular mandates in a way that also builds on students’ strengths and cultural identities” ( p. 78).

References
Baker, Jeannie.
