I knew that different children of different cultures develop in different ways. I have taught in an inner city 3rd grade, 7th and 8th and am now in a suburban 6th and 7th. While the two districts are next to each other the differences in behavior, learning style and developmental stages are vast.

I learned that my expectations for a current Spanish speaking student, even in math class, may be to high as far as giving him tests in only English. I should be providing the tests in both still as I did in the beginning of the school year.

I have done wrapped teaching and have had students two years in a row. While I agree that it can be great for kids to connect with a teacher and feel comfortable there can be times it isn't good. Not every student likes their teacher and if there is a tension that child could become more withdrawn from learning and shut down. There could also be tension between parents and the teacher.

Reading about 14 year olds and their stage of wanting independence I can relate as I have a son who just turned 15. I saw a difference in him this year as he entered high school and pulled away a little and would not be as open as he once was.

As we see our students maturing faster now than they did ten years ago I wonder if we will see a shift of many of the traits down to lower ages. I already have some students that act more mature and at times much older than they are in 7th grade.
