I have studied and explored critical works of different critics of English language, having their own individual style that presents their uniqueness of thought and their judgements on
certain work of art and literature comprehensively.
My favourite critic is John Dryden who was a versatile writer, poet and dramatist.
Dr. Johnson says, “Dryden may be properly considered as the father of English criticism, as the writer who first taught us to determine upon principles the merit of composition”. These words of immense appreciation are enough to convince someone of Dryden’s prominence in literary criticism.
Dryden’s prominent critic work is his Essay of Dramatic Poesy. With this he began a new era of criticism, that guided his peers to be distinguished as authors as well as evaluators.
I believe that one of the distinct features of his criticism is that he advocates the close observation of ancient models but stresses to use them as a torch to find a new way and not to imitate them as they are. In addition to this, he displays respect to his contemporaries and
to classicists.
Furthermore, in his Essay of Dramatic Poesy, he has used dialogue as writing style to connect with readers easily and leave a lasting impression. Also, despite of having been discussed
different point of views in his essay, there seems no sense of imposition of his own views on reader. He does not try to influence the readers in any way, and this is the must have quality of a good critic. Another feather in his cap was that he was the first critic to make use of
historical method of criticism.
It is said that Augustus found Rome brick and left it marble. Saints bury asserts that Dryden's dedication to English poetry was the same as Augustus's isto Rome. Hence, we could say that Dryden discovered English literary criticism "brick" and turned it "marble".

References:
https://neoenglish.wordpress.com/2010/12/16/why-does-jonson-regard-dryden-as-the-father-of-english-criticism/amp/
