Allowing the teacher to share first and then providing examples of how I have taught collaboration with adults even, and maybe share together examples of how we both have experienced collaborative sessions. Focusing on what the teacher wants to have happen and how our own lwarning experiences were used, allows us to collaborate for next steps.

How can I get my students to go back to their focused notes to review and use as a study tool?

I had great success when I gave students an assignment without providing any instructions regarding FNT. Then I provided a set of comprehensive FNT's and connected them to an assignment that required students to use the notes to complete the assignment. Later, I pointed out how easy it was to do the assignment because of the notes. Sometimes the grappling process is a better teacher than telling students to take notes. FNT has obvious benefits for us but sometimes you have to narrow the lens of understanding so that students are forced to see the value of FNT. Then I provide a refresher on FNT and practice modeling FNT with the students.

How can I get my students to go back to their focused notes to review and use as a study tool?

I would guide the educator in thinking about the importance of the focused notes process and the benefit of their use with review and use as a study tool. I would ask the instructor why the notes are important to the learning - what aspects of the note taking process are useful to the lesson? Also, I would ask the educator what aspects of the note taking process deepen the learning of content. I would encourage the educator to reflect and think about the use of the entire process and how it impacts the learning objectives and overall goal of the lesson. Then, I would ask the educator how they could guide students in learning to connect the note taking process with their learning. Ask the educator how they can support the use of the note taking process in the scaffolding of the learning. I might offer suggestions, but ultimately, I would like the educator to own the process.
