A story from one of the plane crews she helped is recorded in the American Air Museum in Britain. In January 1943, the crew of the american B-24D bomber, number 42-40749 (aka the 'Sack Time Sally), departed from Biggs field in Texas with the 389th Bomb Group. After serving almost the whole year in Benghazi, North Africa, they were shot down by German ME-109s over Opeinde, Netherlands in December of 1943. Of the ten man crew, only four of them survived the bail out. Two were captured almost instantly by German forces, Pilot Roy Braly and Gunner John Filenger. Navigator James McGahee managed to escape and found his way to the Dutch resistance. However, the last man, Bombardier Merlin Verberg, was picked up by a nineteen year old girl named Tiny Mulder. She helped and hid him until they were able to get him some new clothes and a fake ID. The two were able to walk past German guards, hand in hand, completely unnoticed ("42-40749").

Tiny Mulder's first job in the underground resistance was a courier. She would bring messages and maps to Rotterdam and Amsterdam for the Ally spies in the region. During her missions she wore a green hat to identify herself as the messenger, as she would not tell anyone her name. Because, as she later wrote, "You never gave your name to anyone. What you don’t know, you can’t reveal" ("Tiny Mulder: Teenage World War II Resistance Heroine").

On May 10, 1940, Nazi Germany's army began their occupation of Tiny Mulder's country. They gave no warning about their intentions, and no declaration of war had ever been issued. As she later wrote, "When I awoke, I wondered what that noise was up in the air. The radio confirmed that the Germans were invading. There was no declaration of war. They just came. Just like that. We were a small country then, of eight million, overrun by a large army" ("Tiny Mulder: Teenage World War II Resistance Heroine").
