As a reward for her devotion, they gave her a plaque and this prayer book. The award was for being an "Eshet Chayil", a woman of valor. <br><br>Significance: For the prayers, for the sentimental value, as well as it being pretty. </div>]]></description>

When she went to Trinidad in 1939 to escape the Nazis, she brought them with her. They loved Opera and Ballet. <br><br>Significance: These are important to my family because they are the last gift my great-grandmother received from her mother, who died during the 2nd World War. </div>]]></description>

It was originally with my great-grandfather who was a train conductor before World War 11.&nbsp; The Siddur got to see everything around the world. When my family moved to Israel, it was one of the few things he brought with him.&nbsp;<br><br>Significance: My great-grandfather used it every time he prayed, both daily on every holiday.&nbsp; It comes from Baghdad where my family originated. My dad uses it the same way to keep the memory and traditions of my great-grandfather alive.'<br><br>Editor's Note: This is a Sephardic Siddur and has some different prayers than a Traditional Ashkenazi Siddur that we are used to using. </div>]]></description>

She passed it down to my mom, so it remains in our family. <br><br>Significance: My great-grandparents lit Shabbat candles and used this Kiddush cup every Friday night to make Kiddush. My great-grandmother grew up on Wildey Street, Tarrytown and most likely belonged to the local Temple. It might have been the Temple that is now Temple Beth Abraham.</div>]]></description>

We use it every year to celebrate Passover, as a memory of  the celebration of the holiday.  It is nice to have something that is handed down from generation to generation. It belonged to Elsie Pfaelzer nee Levy. She is Glory's great-greatgrandma on Carly's side of the family (Glory's mother).<br><br>Significance: Prayerbooks that have such ornate and pretty covers were usually meant for use by women.&nbsp;This is Elsie's personal prayerbook that she would bring with her for High Holiday services. Elsie was involved in Jewish life in the Philadelphia area, and donated a lot of money to Jewish causes. </div>]]></description>

He used it at the ceremony.&nbsp;<br><br>Significance: This is the oldest artifact that we own in our family. It is something special for us to display. It reminds me of my great-grandfather. It also shows me what older siddurs looked like. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Materials: Metal<br>Measurements: 5"<br>Date:&nbsp;c 1979<br>Origin: Probably Israel<br>Owner: Brad D<br>Story: This Kiddush Cup was given to my father Brad D. when he became a Bar Mitzvah in 1979 at Temple Judea, Long Island, NY. It was later used at my aunt's weedding and then a few years later at my parents' wedding for the 2 Blessings over wine in the Wedding Ceremony.&nbsp;<br><br>The Kiddush Cup has cut outs along the rim. The story goes that at my aunt's wedding they forgot to put a shot glass inside the cup, so the wine spilled all over her dress. My parents learned from that and remembered to put the shot glass into the Kiddush cup. <br><br>Significance:&nbsp;It is used on special occasions to say the Blessing Over the Wine. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Materials: Parchment, Leather<br>Measurements:<br>Date: c1930<br>Origin: possibly Europe<br>Owner: Jason Scott M<br>Story: The Tefillin were a gift to my father as a teenager from his grandfather to try and encourage his observance of Judaism.&nbsp; He was passing down his own customs and traditions for future generations.&nbsp;<br>Significance: It's important because it is a passing along of an object of great religious significance&nbsp;<br>(morning daily prayer) from an one generation to another to help perpetuate their family's faith and traditions, even though the younger generations were less observant.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>We hope that you enjoy our marvelous and unusual Living Museum this year, the 2nd time that our exhibtion and catalog are online on Padlet. Our 6th grade class spent hours preparing for this exhibition. We visited the Derfner Museum at the Hebrew Home for Aged in Riverdale. virtually, to kick off our learning in a real museum space.&nbsp; We thank their Museum Director, Susan Chevlowe for all her help in crafting the best experience we could possibly have on line.<br><br>Students worked at home photographing their artifacts, for which we thank the parents and grandparents. They wrote up each individual artifact with facts and stories. Thanks to all our students for their hard work and dedication. Finally each student made a video to approximate an in-person experience.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Galayna C<br>Materials: Wood, Metal, paint<br>Measurements:&nbsp; 4"<br>Date: 1933<br>Origin: Edlund Corporation, Burlington, Vt<br>Owner: Daniel C.<br><br>Story: The bottle opener came from my great-grandmother Ruth Milsten's kitchen. It was made during the Great Depression when times were tight for most families. When she died and the family were cleaning out her apartment, my father Daniel C. took it because he thought it was beautiful.&nbsp;<br><br>Significance: It reminds my father of his grandmother Ruth and grandfather Bubbie,&nbsp; She loved to cook and be in the kitchen. She would give him soda. It is a simple piece of engineering that does the job of removing bottle tops every well, It has lasted so many years.&nbsp;<br><br>Note: The Edlund Corporation is still making good quality kitchen equipment in Vermont, 95 years later.&nbsp;<br><br>Editor's note - the artifact has the remains of turquoise paint on the handle. The paint must have rubbed off because it was used so often. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Shema V'ahavta</em></strong><strong>. Note how the </strong><strong><em>Ayin</em></strong><strong> at the end of </strong><strong><em>Shema</em></strong><strong>, and the</strong><strong><em> Daled</em></strong><strong> at the end of </strong><strong><em>Echad</em></strong><strong> are larger than the other letters. Together they form a new word, "</strong><strong><em>Eyd</em></strong><strong>", witness, because we are bearing witness to the oneness of</strong><strong><em> Adonai</em></strong><strong>.<br>The </strong><strong><em>daled</em></strong><strong> is also larger so that we don't muddle it with </strong><strong><em>resh</em></strong><strong> and form an entirely different word, "</strong><strong><em>acher</em></strong><strong>', meaning 'another'. This would change the meaning of the </strong><strong><em>Shema, </em></strong><strong>substituting God is another for God is One. &nbsp;</strong></div>]]></description>
