Climate Change and Human Impact

Climate change is understood as identified changes in patterns of weather and temperature. Changes to the climate are natural for the most part. However, human activities such as burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas, have induced more rapid changes in the climate. The burning of fossil fuels creates greenhouse gas emissions that confine the sun's heat and thus leading to higher temperatures. The World Health Organization suggests that between 2030 and 2050, climate change will bring on "an additional 250,000 deaths because of health conditions such as malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea and heat stress."

Pol Vandenbroucke, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Pfizer’s Hospital Unit, states that "the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat impact the ways our bodies feel and function." We are interconnected with the Earth, and how we treat and care for the Earth's health influences human health. We have to acknowledge that the warming of the planet will burden everyone and especially those individuals who are more vulnerable.

The presence of a relationship between Earth and its humans is apparent, and paying attention to take actions we take contributes to the increased possibility of preventing excessively drastic changes. Dr. Vandenbroucke believes it is most necessary to focus on "longer-lasting ramifications of a warming planet and who will bear the brunt of the effects." What we often forget is that society will take a extreme toll because the less Earth can be there for us with its resources, we lose the ability to take care of ourselves. Vandenbroucke finds the natural world should pay attention to five environmental conditions likely adding to the number of health issues in the future.

As temperatures move to desperate highs, animals become more susceptible to diseases and humans can witness an increase in sickness spread through insects like ticks and mosquitos. A condition such as malaria could increase, or in the case of several insects like a tick, they can now survive in more locations because winters are not as harsh. The number of cases treated each year could increase, and other vector-borne diseases will inevitably follow. In addition to this spread between insects, loss of natural habitat for wildlife causes harm to animals and leads to potential spread of disease

It is in our hands to go about tackling impacts on climate change and it is important that we all find value in addressing the problem. There are simple steps that can be followed even including using the car to drive less or practicing sustainability, and these actions matter and contribute to a meaningful impact. Another step to take is preparation for extremity, as families should want to have plans for emergencies to make it through natural disasters. While there are many things for us to do, a healthier world certainly stems from big companies making efforts to reduce the greenhouse gasses they emit. Medical institutions and communities need to work together to combat sickness and work to prevent it before it takes place.
