Scar is the brother of King Mufasa who lusts for power and the seat of the throne. He was supposed to be next in line for the throne but it was taken away from him when King Mufasa had a son named Simba. This deepened his jealousy and hatred which eventually led to him ultimately betraying the king and forcefully taking the throne through premeditated murder. The murder is then blamed on a stampede to avoid suspicion, like the chamberlains of Duncan. Just like Macbeth, when the opportunity of becoming king falls into his hands, he acts upon it to ensure its fruition, even if it means to commit a deed as evil as murder.

When Simba returns to the Pride Lands to reclaim the throne, he is in shock to find it in such a grim and desolate state. There have been reports of starvation and the “circle of life” has been disrupted by predators running loose. It is in direct contrast to the start of the film, where Mufasa’s rule was full of life and order. The world seems to react to the disruption of natural order and the evil rule of the tyrannical king, turning into a darker shade. Just like when Macbeth killed Duncan, the land of Scotland immediately reacts, producing vicious storms (2.3.61-70) and more unnatural events such as horses running wild and eating each other (2.4.1-23).

Both Macbeth and Scar are desperate to preserve their reign, which is why they both attempt to eliminate those who directly threaten them. Three hyenas were sent to kill Simba, the rightful heir, just like when three murderers were sent to kill Banquo and Fleance, who was prophesied to become king. Like Fleance, who escaped through the cover of darkness, Simba also escaped, albeit through a forest of thorns. Additionally, Simba also represents Malcolm since he is also the victim of the loss of a father and exile but was kindly taken in, nurtured, and protected by King Edward, who is represented by Timon and Pumbaa (3.6.28-33).

Scar, the ruthless tyrant

Scar shares certain character flaws with Macbeth, such as selfishness, pride, and machiavellianism which ruins their reign as kings. People in Scar’s reign are increasingly discontented with his rule, such as the lionesses refusing to hunt and the hyenas complaining of starvation but Scar only cared for the throne and ruled with an iron fist. In the end, his tyranny eventually led to his demise at the hands of his own people. This is similar in act 3 and later acts, where the lords of Scotland were already wise of Macbeth’s involvement in the murder and many are opposing his unjust reign and cry for the restoration of order within the lands (3.6.1-55).

Simba, the Harbinger of Natural Order

Simba, in certain aspects, represents both Macduff and Malcolm as he is the one responsible for restoring good in his homeland that is plagued by evil. He represents Macduff because he is the one who will raise an army against the tyrant and finally confront Scar and, in the last act, beat him in a duel, forcing him to answer for his crimes. He represents Malcolm as the exiled son who regained his strength through gracious company and is foreshadowed to return to his homeland (3.6.28-43) . Furthermore, in the next act he had to be “convinced” to take back the throne because he doubts that he could be a good ruler. The only difference being that Malcolm was pretending to have doubts whereas Simba had doubts and blamed himself for his father’s death. Simba felt as though he was not worthy to rule and had to be convinced by Nala and his father’s spirit to restore the Circle of Life.
