1. What purposes do theories serve?

A theory is the most important part of any scientific research, Social Sciences included. Theories are used as the basis for understanding certain behaviors and the human mind.

It is an original idea that is used as the framework to provide explanations for collected data or observations.

A theory is also used to generate hypothesis, which can be tested by research or an experiment.

Theories can evolve over time as things are forever changing, and inspire further or future research.

2. What are two (2) theoretical issues on which developmental scientists differ?
Developmental Theories differ based on a couple of different issues:

Existence of the stages of development

Importance of the environment and genetics/heredity

Active and Passive character of development

With that being said, there are two main theoretical models/issues that theorists subscribe to:

Mechanistic Model of Development: Can be compared to that of a machine—organism is primarily reactive to nature and doesn’t serve as the source for it’s own development and acts. Only reacts to factors of the outside and surrounding environment and influences. Organisms are reactive and passive and there is no direction towards and ultimate goal.

Organismic Model: The biological organism. An organism is composed of interconnected and interrelated parts that form an organized, but complex, system. The organism is viewed as active rather than passive. Accordingly, the biological organism view change and movement from within one’s self as opposed to a response from environmental or outside factors.
