SOSD Thematic Writing Practice by Al Hn

Mateship, Loyalty & Conflict:
post a creative response to Act II Scene 2. Write your name in the title line and post your creative piece in the body section.

You may wish to write from the perspective of a character in SOSD (e.g. What does Emma think about all this ruckus? Describe the action and inner monologue of Roo), or use the notion of 'mateship', 'loyalty' and conflict to write a story starter about new characters in a new (or similar) setting.
One paragraph minimum (150 words).

Life was good for Steven.
Steven told his friends everything. He told them all about his feelings and they listened to him all day, giving him advice and good feedback.

It was a Thursday afternoon, I was patiently waiting outside the school gates for my best friend. Not only was she running late, as per usual but when she arrived all she had to say to me was, “hey”, not a “HEY OMG HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!”, just a “hey”. Its like her life doesn’t even revolve around mine, she's my best friend, I should be the only thing on her mind. I asked her if she had anything she needed to say to me, she looked up from her phone, looked at me and shook her head, then went back to being on her phone. I saw her click onto Facebook, I knew this would be the moment of realisation as Facebook reminded her that today was he best friends birthday. I eagerly waited to see the look of utter horror and embarrassment as she realised she had forgotten my birthday. “Oh, true its your birthday, happy birthday dude!” These words made me recognise the mistake I made 3 months ago by befriending an disloyal female dog.

I’m so so sorry. You know I would never want to hurt you. I just… I don’t know… cracked under the pressure. The weight of this secret you burdened me with… it was killing me.” Her tears rolled down her pale face too fast for her to sweep them away.

“Don’t make me feel guilty for confiding in you. I wanted to give you a chance; let you into our family. I should’ve just trusted my instincts. I was right about you from the start.”

Bobby looked at the man sitting beside him, a man that he had once called a friend. In all honesty he was a boy. Twenty-two years of age, with an easy smile and good sense of humour. But, to Bobby, at least, that was the case no longer. When he looked at this boy he saw only betrayal.

“Alexander, have you got a lighter?” The man squatting beside them in the muddy terrain, near the Vietnamese cane fields.

Bobby looked up from his dirty, cracked fingernails. Having come from a country town in Victoria, working the farms, he was used to being hard working. In fact, he thrived on it. But even his dedication to his work had not prepared him for the stark reality of a war. Particularly within the jungles of South Vietnam where the locals used tactics of Guerrilla warfare.

Alexander handed over a silver lighter. He was constantly surrounded by the smell of smoke. But now he smelled of sweat and mud, from lack of showering.

“Thanks mate.” The older man said, lighting up. He took a drag and sighed. “It’s a bloody peace of work, this war is. When did you arrive, I haven’t seen your baby faces before.”

Bobby shifted uncomfortably. He and Alexander had signed up for the war together, wanting to impress Lacey Allan in their khaki uniforms. She had been a rare beauty in the town that could only boast sixty-four people, and she was so stylish too having come from Melbourne. Instantly, the two boys had been infatuated. Each trying to outdo each other to gain her affection. It had started out as a friendly competition, but became a violent brawl extremely quickly. Of course, they had signed up for the war long before their fallout.
