When my dad got the golden Cadillac I loved it, but my mom had a different opinion. When my dad pulled up in the driveway he told us to go get our mom so me and my big sister went to go get mom. And when she came out you could see the anger on her face. That moment I thought ohh no. Then my dad tried to convince her that it was ok and we should go on a ride. But she said” no, I need to get back to cooking.” I could tell she was angry so I just stayed out of it. When we got back and mom was tucking me in I asked “mom why don’t you like dad’s car.” Then she responded with “why don’t you go to sleep!”

But, because it was his the white policeman told him to get out and he put my father in the back of the police car and the other white policeman got in our gold Cadillac and followed the police car. Father almost got taken away from Me, Wilima and Mother dear. It was really strange for me. As we went to let father rest by a tree, mother stayed out watch for him. I took a knife from the picnic basket, I was really scared about everything and wanted to watch out for father and mother. I don't understand why the police wanted to get my father when we need him! Hi I’m Lewis and my dad got this fineee Cadillac! It wasn’t just an ordinary Cadillac it was golden! Pap told us to go inside and tell mama to come see the Cadillac! I went in the house and got mama and told her that papa had an surprise waiting outside! Mama and me ran back outside. We all looked at the reaction on mamas face she wasn’t so surprised. Momma didn’t like the Cadillac mama liked the mercury we had before. She said it was just fine. Papa was kinda upset that mama didn’t like the cadillac I was confused! Why wouldn’t she like the Cadillac it was gold! It was the next day (Sunday) mama didn’t want to ride in the Cadillac so she walked to church. Papas was waiting with the Cadillac all ready to drive up to the church. Papas felt rejected because momma just walked right passed the car. Later on that day papas told us that he was going to drive down to south Mississippi. We all thought it was an bad idea becuause segregation was still going on! We tried stopping him but it was no use papas wouldn’t change his mind! So mama decied that me and my sister and mama was going to go with papa just Incase. My aunts cousins and uncle decied to come just so we all can be together. Everyone go ready to go momma and my aunts where making food for the trip yum! We all get in our cars and we head down to Mississippi. The trip was going good until we saw signs that said “white people only” “no colored” . Papas explained to us that the white people didn’t like us . Next thing u know papas got pulled over and two white cops came out of the car. One cop told papas to get out the car and get in the back of the polices car.The other was driving the Cadillac. Papas did as he was told. 3 hours later papas came back and our family was back on the road!

One day my dad pulled up in one fine golden cadillac. It was one of the best I had ever seen. Everyone else thought the same on the block besides my mother. She was really wanting to buy us a new house. We all took a ride in the car besides mother. We always go to church together but mother refused to go so she walked the three blocks. Then my father announced that he was going south to Mississippi to visit there grandparents. But everyone tried to talk him out of it because that’s where the Jim Crow Laws were that meant that white people and black people were separated from each other. Then mom said that she would go. So did we. When we finally left and when got to the Ohio river my dad said not for me and my brother to say a word when we saw a white person. When we finally got in Mississippi a police car pulled up behind us and put dad in the car and a police drove our car to the station and dad got a speeding ticket after us waiting for over three hours.

We were going to Mississippi in the gold Cadillac. As we were driving there I saw lots of signs saying “no color”. I was confused on what these signs meant. We continued down the road and then we saw a police car. They forced my dad to get out. They called him a liar when he said it was his car. I was angry amd confused on why they were calling him a liar. It was our car! We went to the police station. They paid for a ticket and we left. The next morning my dad said we were going back to memphis. “Why?” I asked my dad. He said it was cause more trouble if we drove farther south with the Cadillac. We rode in a cousin’s car and were able to reach the rest of the family back in Mississippi. Being confused i finally asked dad what the signs meant. He said it was because lf blacks being slaves and that we didn’t have the rights to do things whites could. This made me mad. We went back home after a week and my dad sold the Cadillac. As I walked out of the house I saw my papa. I saw the most beautiful gold Cadillac. It was the most amazing and beautiful I’ve ever seen! I loved it. As I walked up to him he put his hand on the car! I was so confused. I asked him “papa who’s car is this”! I was confused was it ours! He replied “yes yes it is!” I was over the moon about it we decided togo to Mississippi we went. One day my daddy came home with a brand new gold cadilc. It was shined up and nice. 🚖.My mom didn’t think so. she did not ride in it and wanted the money for a house. My mom walked everywhere for the longest time. One day my dad wanted to go to Mississippi. He did not want us to go with him. My mom wanted to go and me and my sister went to. When we were getting close to mississipppi there were singhs saying no colored people. All of the hotels had them. So did some gas stations and restuants🍤. A police 👮🏻‍♀️pulled us over and said we stool the Cadillac. They took my daddy for a long time. We waited and waited. Finially he came out with a ticket. He was not speeding but they gave him one anyway. We drove for a long time and the police followed us. Then when they left we stoped to rest. In the morning we went to get my cousins car. Then we took the back roads to get to my grandparents house. When we left we went in a convey with the rest of my family back to Ohio. My dad then sold the car.

Ok this is awesome I looked outside of my window and there it was a golden Cadillac. It was shiny with big seats the kind that the rich folks have. I ran out of the door with my big sister Wilma. In the mean time my mom was making breakfast. My dad was standing in the drive way admiring the new car. We called mama out and her jaw dropped. “This is terrible”.
