The section starts off with describing the Usher house as a valet brings the narrator to Roderick. It says the house has many dark and intricate passages, somber tapestries on the walls, black floors and armorial trophies that seemed to be changing as they walked. As the valet opened the door to see the master, the narrator witnessed a large room with long and narrow windows, small gleams of light got in. Usher was on a sofa when the narrator entered the room and immediately arose to greet him, as they sat Usher spoke no words, but they watched each other and Usher is pitiable for having been changed so terribly in such little time, he is almost unrecognizable compared to the man he was in boyhood. Usher is described by having a gaunt complexion, eyes large, liquid, and luminous, his lips were thin and pale, with a beautiful curved nose.

The next half of the section goes into Usher’s illness. Usher said that he really wanted to see the narrator, he said that he can’t find a remedy for a family evil, the evil being his malady is dying. Usher himself was suffering from a morbid acuteness of sense, with the most insipid food being unbearable, the clothes he wears could only be a certain texture, odors of all flowers were oppressive, just the smallest bit a light would torturre his eyes, but there were peculiar sounds which didn’t bring out any horror from him at all. Usher then goes on to say, “I shall perish, I must perish in this deplorable folly.” The narrator learned of 1 more part of the illness Usher had, which was that he was bound to the house from superstitious impressions. This meant that Usher had never gone forth and had stayed in the house forever.

“On one of the staircases, I met the physician of the family. His countenance, I thought, wore a mingled expression of low cunning and perplexity.”

This was valuing feelings over logic because the man meets a physician of the family but still looks down on him. Saying he is low cunning and perplexity. He is also saying he was “accosted with trepidation” meaning that he doesn’t trust that man or he is trying to do something bad.

“A glance, however at his countenance, convinced me of his perfect sincerity. We sat down; and for some moments while he spoke not, I gazed upon him with a feeling half of pity , half of awe.”

A man was trying to talk to Usher, and Usher greeted this man with “full length, and greeted him with a vivacious warmth.” This is valuing feelings over logic because he is trying to talk to Usher but Usher is completely silenced, and this man is feeling some type of way for him instead of trying to get him to talk. Trying to talk him him made him feel some type of way because he remembered someone with a lot of the features like him.
