I took the VARK questionnaire and these are my scores:

· Visual 8

· Aural 15

· Read/Write 12

· Kinesthetic 7

You have a multidimensional learning preference.

I would say it is pretty close to how I know myself, so it does come handy.

This lesson connects well with my previous knowledge and experience about how the mind process information and in particular learning. A member of my extended family is a guy who had great challenge graduating school, however this person is an absolute genius when it comes to mechanics, he can build and fix machines in almost a magical way, he just feels what needs to be done and gets on top of it. I think that if the school system had acknowledged that this person is highly kinesthetic oriented in how he learns, he would have had a much easier and successful time as a pupil.

I am sure that neither this person nor his teachers really understood why he was having so much trouble learning in compare with the rest of the class, other than thinking that he is probably just a weak learner, however an awareness and knowledge by the teacher of his particular learning style, and of course acting on it, could have made a real difference to his learning experience.

Of course this knowledge and understanding of the learning style is not only handy to those who at the extreme and really challenged, rather, the possibility of learning in a style that best suits each one's preference can bring so much joy to the learning process.

And this is a major factor for a student motivation.

Enjoying learning just because the most adequate specific mean of learning is used (i.e. technique, method or activity in line with the suitable learning style) can greatly contribute to having consistent learners with serious and a deepening approach.

Personally I remember that when I was asked to participate verbally in discussions in class, that was both fun and conducive for my learning.

In acknowledging the importance of learning styles, students would be greatly encouraged to learn and succeed, the more the learning style matched their preference and the more individuals will be able to choose the strategies that best works for them, the better.

When the system opens up to acknowledge learning style, the preferred learning styles will be further developed.

When I observed how the same lesson can be taught in different approaches (based on learning style preference) it was striking to me to realize how much of an effect this can have on my behavior and motivation to learn, simply because of the fact that it made my learning process so much easier and enjoyable once my inclination to auditory/oral is met.

I would even think this not just nice to have, this should be a substantial consideration in the teacher agenda.

One way I can think of applying those new understanding is by giving the students fill in the questionnaire and in light of the results decide on the methods, techniques, activities I will use in class, there is also a questionnaire for teachers and trainers in the VARK questionnaire.
