Being an athlete involves accepting risks and playing through pain.According to the sport ethic, an athlete does not give in to pressure, pain, orfear. Many sport activities pose inherent risks of injury, but voluntarily acceptingthe possibility of injury is a sign of courage and dedication among athletes (Donnelly, 1980, 1981; Williams & Donnelly, 1985)

There is an issue where sporting ideologies promote surpassing your limit in performance while keeping the body in a healthy state. “serving to push the body beyond its limits while insisting on its preservation” (Johns,1998)

In sports such as boxing, boxers will tend to lose weight in a short period of time where body weight is not in a constant/regulated state due to bad eating habits. ‘there is a likelihood that diet and food intake may become obsessional, leading to subclinical eating problems (Rosen, McKeag, Hough, & Curley, 1986; Brunberg, 1988; Hsu, 1990).

Snyder 1972 and spreitzer and Snyder 1989) stated the ideology of being in athlete involved making sacrifices for the game. This is a common sports ideology as people who are considering going down the road of playing professional sport may have the thought of giving up certain things for success. This can be damaging to ones health as it promotes the idea that being a sports perform prohibits them from doing all the regular thing that they enjoy doing. It may also cause confusion further down the path of success as they may not know what they can keep in their life what needs to be sacrificed. This can in the worse case lead to mental health issues.

(Hughes and coakley 1991) also stated that being an athlete involves accepting risks and playing through pain. This is another ideology and put the idea in the head of athletes that they will go through a lot of pain and have to play through it. This also makes the performers think that going through pain that is not necessarily normal, normal; which may not be necessarily true. This can directly affect ones health due to the fact that they may have a severe injury that shouldn’t be dismissed, however due to the ideology of playing through pain could lead to the injury getting worse, injuring other players and decreasing a teams chance in winning.

(Hugh and Coakley 1991) winning symbolises improvements and establishes distinction; losing is tolerating only to the extent that is part of the experience of learning how to win. This ideology highlights how becoming a sports performer is so serious and tunnelled in on winning and losing. This ideology further derives from how sports can be around other things than just winning, for example winning and bringing people together. It also implies that losing is such a negative thing to occur, when in actuality it ignores how you can still improve whilst losing. This lastly could make athletes feel inhuman as it further implies that they are signing up to only win and takes the fun and the humane aspect out of it
