The embryo at this stage in pregnancy is attached to a tiny yolk sac that provides nourishment which is called an amniotic sac. A few weeks later, a placenta is fully formed and will transfer the nutrients to the embryo. The outer layer of the amniotic sac develops into the placenta. Cells from the placenta grow into the wall of the womb and provide a rich blood supply. If the mother does goes over 42 weeks she can choose to have her labour induced. If she decides not to then the mother should be offered increased monitoring to check the baby's health and well-being.
