Head Start programs believe that young children learn best through play. When children are actually touching, building and exploring objects they are gaining cognitive skills. Head Start is big on children being able to explore and learning from their environment. There are several different centers set up throughout the classroom, for example, dramatic play, science, and art. We are also constantly talking to the children and singing songs to help build language and also so the children know what is the next transition. I used to work at a developmental preschool and in the general classrooms, they were only allowed to use technology for special occasions. In the Autism specialty room where I taught, we were allowed to used technology for specific things. An Ipad for non-verbal students, and some expressive videos for sensory kids. Each preschool has to have a curriculum just like grade schools. The curriculum has to be approved by the DOE. If it is not up to standards, the school will lose funding. I believe is a rule of the ABC program, not necessarily our district or specific school.
