Some things that I want to do in my future classroom to make it more accessible are to first do most of our assignments/ work on paper so that technology is not a limiting factor for students. The next thing I will do is make sure everyone has the physical ability to learn- people with wheelchairs will need different accommodations (like ramps instead of stairs), people who have bad vision will need to sit closer, etc. The last thing I will do is make sure to teach in many different ways since everyone is a different type of learner (visual, auditory, written, etc).

Things that I want to do in my future classroom that will make it more accessible to everyone would first be providing a multitude of seating options. I remember being in elementary school and loving SSR time because I could sit on the floor or bean bags. I also want to provide multi-modal instruction. I know that all students learn in many different ways, so providing them with oral, visual, physical, etc. instruction options will be exciting and beneficial for all! Lastly, I want to make sure technology is not an issue so providing students with technological and physical hard copy options will be helpful. I never want technology to be a barrier, but rather a bridge.

I really enjoyed all the ways to make a classroom more accessible, especially related to technology. In consequence, all 3 of my solutions to making my classroom more accessible are tech-related. Technology is still fairly new, and it continues to advance every day; it can become overwhelming or confusing fast. So, to make learning in my classroom fun, easy, and more accessible, I will:

Use Closed Captioning. Until I got to college, in bigger rooms, I did not need to use captions, because I could hear the videos fine. Now, I really need them to help me comprehend what is being said sometimes. I know other students have a hard time hearing, or also want something to see to go along with what they hear. Without this tool, some children miss out on the opportunity to learn something new and can feel left out from their classmates; I want to adjust my classroom in a way where everyone can learn comfortably.

Presentations/Slideshows. Currently, I excessively use slide shows and presentations for any project or study guide. In a classroom setting, I think it helps students not feel as overstimulated as they would with a big handout with a lot of words. A lot of writing can feel jumbled together for some students, which hinders their learning experience. In order to prevent this, I plan to use slideshows with minimal words and use my voice to express extra knowledge. All vital information would be displayed in the presentation with extra facts coming from me.

Text-to-Speech. As a kid and an adult, I have loved to read books. However, recently I found I have had trouble really comprehending the words in front of me if I did not have someone saying them outloud. Text-to-speech is perfect for that because it takes the same idea of an audiobook and puts it on every piece of reading. It’s nice not to have to spend extra time trying to decipher a puzzle and then spend more time learning what the puzzle is, and I want to prevent stopping at unnecessary barriers on our way to learning something new in my classroom.

In my future classroom I will offer multiple means of engagement. This could look like offering digital and paper versions of an assignment, or providing a text to read and a text-to-speech version. I want my students to feel like the class content is accessible to them, and not everyone has the same approach to materials. So, by offering different forms of the same assignment, I hope to increase participation and excitement. Secondly, I will use closed captions on videos shown in class. Not only does this support those Deaf or hard of hearing, but any student who may be sat far away from a speaker or who has a hard time paying attention can benefit from this. Additionally, it supports vocabulary growth and reading comprehension skills. Lastly, I will have a daily schedule displayed both in words and images. This will help students know what to expect from the day, and prepare for transition times.

By providing captioning it allows children to not only hear instruction but also visually read it. This is super critical for students, especially for students with ADD or sensory needs. It is very helpful for students to be able to wiggle or bounce while still working because it helps many students focus when they are moving.

Displayed Schedule. This is important for those students who may have anxiety about the timing of things. Having a schedule visually available also allows students to mentally prepare for each subject.

Three things I can do:

Adaptive and accessible seating. The addition of flexible seating includes the addition of sensory aids and/or preference seating(yoga ball chairs, spinning chairs, standing desks..) allows students who might struggle with staying still or prefer to stand options to keep them engaged and comfortable during lessons.

Provide live lecture captions. There are many apps and websites that can translate live captions and connect to microphone systems in the classroom. The addition and combination of these two systems can provide assistance for students who might struggle with hearing or staying attentive, as well as assist students with understanding the things being said.

Multi-medial teaching or the implementation of universal design for learning principles. Offering students both visual, auditory, and hands-on learning experiences helps to assist diverse learners with any difficulties in their learning process. This also allows students the opportunity for full conceptual understanding because they are seeing the same topic in multiple modes and can learn from each of them in different ways.

Three things I could do in a classroom to increase the level of accessibility are:

Ensure preferential seating for exceptional students: some students with physical exceptionalities (deafness, blindness) might need extra space or proximity to the front of the classroom. Being aware of those students' needs and providing for them is an excellent way to improve accessibility in the classroom. In addition, students with behavioral or learning disabilities could use different seating with varying proximities to resources, other students, and boundaries to boost their learning.

Post agendas and resources in one location per day/week: if students have a reason that they cannot be in class (especially chronic absentees), providing a structured outline of what should be completed, the day's timeline, and what to do next helps with productivity and awareness. Posting those outlines on an educational platform like Canvas, Brightspace, or Padlet could increase student performance, as they can be accountable for their own achievement. In addition, these agendas could be printed out with paper options of all the resources listed on the page to promote more accessibility.

Ensure regular breaks for all students: regardless of a student's age or exceptionality, many need brain breaks to assist their focus throughout class. Taking a break to play a group game, allow snacks, or silent time allows the class' mind to recuperate and prepare for another chunk of learning. Doing yoga or playing a memory game are some examples of these brain breaks.

Something I might do in my future classroom to make it more accessible is post my lecture slides. This is for students to go back to and reference if they missed something during class time, or even missed class as a whole. To go along with this, I would record my lessons. During this time, most teachers include additional information and details based on the slides that could be critical for a student to understand the concepts. Additionally, it could be beneficial for students who have auditory and/or processing problems. Lastly, I would like to incorporate graphic organizers and guided notes into my lessons. Personally, these have been very beneficial for me as a student as away to keep myself organized and later review for tests. I know that similarly, my students could benefit from this as a way to not only keep them organized, but ensure that they have all the key concepts of the lesson in their notes.

In order to make my classroom more accessible I would have flexible seating, interactive technology, and multiple means of submitting assignments. By having flexible seating you allow students to find a space in which they feel comfortable to learn. This can also help students that are hard of hearing or vision move to where they can receive information best. By allowing them to do this themselves it removes the public knowledge of a struggle if they don’t want others to know. Having interactive technology allows students to cater to their own understanding level. If they want more practice they can click into more resources that can further explain the material to them. Having built in expansions lessens the fear of asking questions as well. Finally, having multiple ways to turn assignments in can reduce the inequality of electronics. If there is a paper option and online option students will have more flexibility with their assignments and won't require technology to participate in class.

1.) Adaptive Art tools for students with disabilities. I would invest in tools that have attachments to assist with fine motor skills or cognitive disabilities. This might look like larger handles on brushes or grips on brushes, pencil grips, non-spill jars for paint or other liquids, and/or disability friendly pottery wheels.

2.) Flexible seating. When making art, it is important to be comfortable so you can. really focus on the details. I plan to make my classroom have multiple seating options like stools, chairs, and cushions. As well as ensuring the tables are at the right height for wheelchair using students. I will also have different kinds of surfaces for students to work on like slanted surfaces and standing desks for students who might like to stand.

3.) Digital resources. I would provide students with pre-recorded videos of myself and other artist performing certain art processes for them to watch in case they need more resources. I would also demo these processes in class and provide extra help after. However, I know that I am the kind of student that has to watch a process over and over again to understand how to do it myself. I don't mind to show a student as many times as they need because I know I need that kind of support myself.

Three things I can do in my classroom to make it more accessible:

One thing I will definitely include in my classroom is flexible seating. I think flexible seating is a great way for students to find comfortability in the classroom and comfortability creates a better learning environment. Personally, I am more focused when I am sitting in my cozy beanbag chair, or on my couch then I am when I am sitting at a desk in an uncomfortable metal chair. I also think it is more engaging for students when they can move around while we learn. I have no issue with students standing behind their desk or wobbling or bouncing on a yoga ball as long as they are not disturbing others in the classroom. Movement is good for students. Being in a classroom all day and sitting listening to a teacher is boring, but there are ways to make it fun and engaging.

Another adaptation I will add to my classroom is closed captions for any video, movie, or audio we listen to or watch. I think closed captions are really important because even as someone who does not have a hearing impairment, I find it so much easier to comprehend the audio when I am looking at a text as well. When someone reads a text aloud, I like to have the text in front of me so I can follow along. I also find that when I am watching TV shows or movies, I always turn on the captions, because I find myself following the content better. Closed captions allow students to auditorily and visually process information.

Lastly, I will provide response options in my classroom. What I mean is when we are completing work or homework assignments, I will provide digital and physical options for completion. I know that some students work better when they have pencil and paper in front of them, but I also know that some students need technology to help aid them in their instruction and learning. Therefore, I would like to provide my students the option of whichever resource they prefer.

In my future classroom, I want to make sure all students feel safe and supported. First, I plan to use different ways to present information, whether that is visuals on the board, audio like videos shown, or hands-on activities, so all different learning styles are included. Second, I’ll keep the room set up with flexible seating so that students have options of where they want to sit for things like whole group instruction and small group instruction. I don't want to overcrowd the room with seating, so they have lots of space to move around freely. Lastly, I’ll create a welcoming environment by using technology when needed, but not overusing it. I think giving students choices in how they learn and different avenues to learn will work well in creating an inclusive environment.

I’ve been to 8 different schools so I know how hard it can be to adjust and feel included. In my future classroom I’ll do three things to make it more accessible. First, I’ll give students different ways to show what they know, like drawing, writing, or painting. Second, I’d include books that reflect different cultures and backgrounds so everyone feels seen. Third I want to use tech like talk to text and audiobooks for students who need extra engagment. I want every student to feel like they belong and can succeed in their own way.

Three things I can do to make my class more accessible:

I will make sure to have clear communication through captions on the screen and lots of visuals while giving directions. This ensurers that students that have a hard time hearing or ADHD can stay involved and focuses while I am speaking. Some students have a hard time just listening so having captions can make they have other resources to stay involved.

I also want to provide paper options for assignments that may be originally assigned with technology. Not only do some students not have full access to technology, but some students simply cannot preform as well with computers. I remember always struggling with computer assignments because they were hard to navigate. I felt much more comfortable using paper, so I will make sure to provide that option of someone wants it.

Lastly I will provide lots of seating options and alternatives. I want to add bands to the bottom of desks so that students who have trouble sitting still have something to do with their feet. I would love to maybe add some standing desks as well so that students have the option to stand if they need to.

For my future classroom I believe it is important to incorporate more than one learning tool to help your students succeed. These include visual aids, hands on learning, and verbal instruction. Visual aids are important because they provide students with visual examples so students can create connections between content and pictures/ booklets/ or activities. Hands on learning allows students to create connections through book visual aids and real-world interactions. Verbal instruction, which is most common, is important for students to create connections from what you are saying to what they are learning. These aids will support diverse learning needs. As well as ensure that all students can access the material. Some examples could be visual aids throughout your slides that students can look back on, audio on chrome books for students who cannot type or follow visually. Overall, I will use technology to help students with speech tools so they can engage and follow the curriculum.

Including resources such as text to speech or captioning. Last semester I was in a course where I spent months researching the experiences of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in Foreign Language courses. I was able learn that a large number of classrooms in general do not or cannot provide sufficient accommodations for students with disabilities which affect how they receive information.

Presenting students with different styles of explanations. Some students learn best with hands-on work, some learn best through step-by-step explanation, and some need to see it be done first. I find that students, especially when completing writings that require credible sources, often are unaware of what online resources to use and how to use them.

Three actions that I would take to ensure my classroom is more accessible to students would be to use visually stimulating aids, hands on materials, and certain accommodations for students. Firstly, visually stimulating aids can help students understand and comprehend material more successfully. This can be achieved by using images, videos, and even video games on tv screens that are standard in most classrooms. Secondly, hands on materials like historical items can help with learning, because students can be physically apart of the lesson. Additionally, printable handouts, activities, and study guides can stay with they students outside of the classroom. Lastly, accommodations need to be made for certain students, to ensure they comprehend the lesson. For example, captions for individuals that have hearing problems and larger fonts for those with vision problems.

Three things that I might do in my future classroom to make it more accessible are providing subtitles on my projector screen that transcribe what I am saying to the class. This will help my students follow along with my speech in text benefiting students with ADHD, hearing impairments, and all students. Another thing I will do is provide guided note sheets for my students. This will help students be more organized and have something to follow along with during the lesson, benefiting their executive functioning. A third thing that I will include in my classroom is alternative lighting sources for my students. The overhead lighting in most classrooms are very harsh and cause many students to feel overstimulated. To help make my classroom more accessible, I will incorporate more lamps and alternative light sources.

Accessibility in a class setting often means not just providing solutions to a specific person or group of people, but implementing tools that would be accessible to every type of student. Given the resources I found three that I think could be implemented in my future classroom at a UDL/ tier one level.

After researching immersive VR tools, I think they would be a great resource in the classroom. This way students can engage more fully with content. Providing multiple means of content delivery can also include variety of visual aid presentations, interactive activities and subtitled videos or audios for diverse learners.

Another tool I found interesting was the speech-to-text software. I have personal experiences with the lack of tools for print or writing disabilities. I often struggled with timed essays and spelling errors, so having that tool would have made the classroom significantly more accessible.

Positive classroom culture is also such an important thing to highlight in creating a functional learning space. Taking away social stigmas surrounding different cultures and diverse learners allows all students to feel respected. This fosters a better environment for learning.

Three ways I plan to make my classroom more accessible:

Closed-captioning in Videos: As a person who struggles to hear due to a disability I gained while in the military, this is a great tool to not miss out on any information. Something I have noticed also as an audio book lover is that listening and reading along help the mind to remember and maintain knowledge easier as you are using two forms of learning at the same time. When we are long listening and not reading we may not catch every detail.

Graphic organizers: one I’m a huge fan of them for myself but as a parent this is something I began using in small portions for my children. I feel having these in classroom setting creates a less scary view of what students are doing each day. Also having printed organizers for students when writing is so valuable to helping them get their thoughts on paper to make the writing process less scary.

Visual timers: these are so useful at every level! Creating time and carving it out and visually seeing it make work more manageable and less stressful. Creating tasks that can be chopped into time slots makes for a more digestible environment for everyone and keeps everyone on task! Beat the clock!

Some ways that I plan to make my classroom more accessible is to:

Include lots of pictures and visual aids for whatever topic we are learning. I think this makes things more fun and engaging. It could be considered a little juvenile for older grades but even older age groups love to be kids at heart.

Transition breaks. Some students have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time and have trouble focusing when they are. Being able to move around and stretch during transition times would benefit them. Doing this during transition periods in the lesson makes it so it isn't as disruptive and they can all come back together and start the lesson at the same place.

Paper copies. For any activity that we do, I want to make sure that there can be a paper version. Some people prefer to do things on paper as opposed to digitally, and it also gives people who may not have the same access to technology an opportunity to do the assignment without having to go through extra steps if they don't have the resources.
