1. _{Alliteration—repeating an initial sound several words in row  “Tall trees trembled”}

2. _{Allusion—reference to another text, an event, or place.  Sometimes used for affect or to make a comparison.  The reader then makes the connection.}

3. _{Analogy—a device used in making a comparison between two objects.  Often used to compare a new object to an existing one, so the reader understands the new one by understanding how it is similar or different to the reference object.}

4. _{Assonance—repeating the vowel sound of a word to make an internal rhyme in a word or phrase.  “Quite like.”}

5. _{Connotation—a meaning of a word that goes beyond the dictionary meaning.  Skinny has a negative connotation that thin does not.}

6. _{Couplet—a pair of rhymed lines in a poem.  Sonnets and other poems use couplets.}

7. _{Denotation—the dictionary definition of a word.}

8. _{Enjambment—a type of poem where the lines run on to the next line rather than ending with a complete grammatical or logical line.}

9. _{Figurative language—language that conveys meaning beyond the literal definition of the words.  Includes analogies, metaphor or simile, imagery, and hyperbole.}

10. _{Free verse—poetry without regular meter or rhyme}

11. _{Hyperbole—language that includes exaggeration for effect.}

24. _{Stanza—a division or unit of a poem.  One stanza may follow the same pattern as others, or it may be different.  Stanza can break up or group a poem the way that paragraphs break up or group ideas in prose.}

25. _{Symbol—an object or item in a story that stands for something else, often an abstract concept.  A dove representing peace is a symbol.}

26. _{Theme—a main idea of a literary work, as conveyed in the events or characters.}

Students play as Thoreau as they attend to his basic needs of life in the woods, exploring his thoughts on self-reliant living and his critique of materialism in early industrial society in America.

Students explore the woods near Thoreau’s cabin seeking traces of the individuals and groups who lived in the area before and during his time there and reflecting on the stories in our histories that are not always told.

Students take a mindful walk around the in-game Walden Pond, stopping to appreciate the virtual environment around them. As they explore, they will cultivate skills for being “awake” in the present moment.

Students will engage with historical and modern questions of slavery, abolition, and freedom, discovering the power of civic actions that are authentic, responsible, and informed.

Students will take on the role of “citizen scientists” as they explore Thoreau’s contributions to our scientific understanding of the environment at Walden Pond and the effects of climate changes on that environment over the past 150 years.
