I think that FRESH is telling an important story because the video shows you where your food comes from. This is important because it shows the mistreatment of animals by the farmers. This allows you to support the farmers who are raising their animals and crops ethically and organically, instead of using pesticides and hormones to genetically modify their animals and plants.

There is saying that you must "vote with your dollars", as consumers we take on the responsibility to promote what we think is best for us. In the fresh movie they talk about how changing the entire food system is possible it just takes one consumer, one farmer at a time. Community members can steer the way politicians impact this cause by buying the majority of their products from local, organic, and sustainable farmers. This will make politicians want to invest in this cause because consumers are putting more money into it.

I think FRESH is an important story to be telling right now because the world population is only growing, and if the majority of farmers convert to a sustainable way of farming, there will be many benefits. Sustainable agricultural practices protect the environment and the earth's natural resources, which will promote the food supply for years to come. This will increase the production of human food in an ethical way, and enhance communities. Sustainable farming will lead to the production of sufficient food for the growing population, and protect and enhance the environment.

The movie raised many concerns for me such as the health of the farmers, how animals are raised, and truly how threatening pesticides are to the environment. Specifically in the movie, the chick litter was shown to have contained chemicals that cause irritation to the body, which is threatening to the health of farmers. Also, the treatment of the chicks in the farm was very concerning, as they were just thrown onto the ground in batches. The feeding of dead cows to alive cows is additionally concerning as it causes side effects in the alive cows, which can ultimately affect the health of the individual consuming this diseased cow. The use of pesticides and herbicides makes industrial agriculture unsustainable as it reduces diversity, which is very damaging to the environment and raises my concerns.

This film opened my eyes to the unsustainable nature of industrialized farming and the position it puts farmers in. I found it particularly interesting how all of the agriculture "experts" recommended to the farmers to industrialize, as this would be their best bet financially, at the expense of the health of the land. And even if the farmers use these mainstream methods, they would all surely go bankrupt without government subsidies anyway. Moreover, the apparent distaste farmers have for this industrial approach was made apparent by the local people not willing to catch chickens, and the farmers said they had to hire prisoners to do so. If you need to hire prisoners do to a job like that, there's probably something wrong with the system.

I am most concerned about the way animals are treated. Before watching the film I had known that animals in the food industry were being mistreated, but I did not know the extent. It seems that farmers do not know how to care for the animals they are farming. Cows are being fed dead cows- even though they are herbivores. Not only is this cannibalism, but it is not good for the health of the cows. On top of this, the film depicted chickens being thrown from their crates. The animals are not being cared for, they are treated as if they only exist for the benefit of people.

Viewers of the documentary will become more aware of where their products come from and this will hopefully persuade them to purchase more organic food. If word spreads and we, as a culture, increase the popularity of organic food and make processed food less popular, we can solve many problems that root from the unhealthy processing of food.

I believe that FRESH is an important story to tell because people should know how their food is being prepared and how industrialized the food system has become. A lot of people do not know how horrible a lot of farm animals are being treated and the risks that come with only farming one crop or animal in a large area. The documentary does a good job at explaining how fertilizers and pesticides are being used by industrial farmers and the risks that are associated with their use. Also the documentary gives an alternative to eating mass produced produce with sustainable farming which is the solution to the problem presented in FRESH.

Commercial farms contribute largely to deforestation and methane emissions which are very detrimental to the environment. FRESH draws attention to these unsustainable farming practices while also introducing farmers that do raise their animals and grow their produce in a sustainable and natural way in order to show their audience that there is a way to farm in an environmentally friendly way that is still economically beneficial.

On one end of the spectrum, is the industrially produced food that is extremely unsustainable and bad for the environment, while on the other is the locally grown food that is environmentally sustainable, and overall beneficial to communities. By illustrating the two sides of food production, the documentary provides information to consumers in order to educate them about their food buying, and assists them in making the best choice not only for themselves, but for their community, and even the planet.

What concerns me most about the food I eat is how safe is the food I am eating and how humane were the animals treated. The use of pesticides and their impact on my overall health is scary because there are negative impacts in consuming residue from pesticides and fertilizers. Also with farmers typically growing one crop or animal it makes them more susceptible to E-Coli outbreaks or other bacterial outbreaks which also concerns me regarding my health. Also I am also concerned with how the animals are being treated because they animals are alive and should be given at least a decent life before they are killed. Seeing the baby chickens being just thrown onto the ground was really sickening and made me sad to see them being treated that way.

This video really changed my perspective on the agricultural system that is in place right now and the people that run it. Firstly, some farmers were treating their animals very poorly which I found hard to watch. They were doing anything they could to maximize their efficiency, even if it was using pesticides or keeping animals in extremely poor conditions. However, there were many other farmers who were trying to do the right thing by treating their animals with lots of care and growing their crops organically. It was good to the the farmers who were trying to make a difference.

What concerns me most about the food I eat is the health impact it can have on me and others but also the environmental impact it can have. A big part of this concern is GMO's, genetically modified organisms. GMO's are living organisms whose genetic material has been modified in a lab. It is unknown whether it is safe to eat GMO's, but people do it everyday. Additionally, genetically modified crops are the reason for superbugs and superweeds, which leads to farmers using incredible toxic chemicals to kill them, which can be harmful to humans and the environment.

This documentary changed my perspective entirely on the current food system. While I was previously aware that the industrialized food production process had negative environmental impacts, I was unaware that it actually was worse economically for the farmers involved in the process. As the movie said, industrial farmers need to produce their corn and soybeans at a very low price, a price that is significantly lower than the cost of production, and thus would lose money while producing these goods; in order to address this problem, the government is then forced to use taxpayer dollars to provide subsidies to these industrial farmers. Thus, not only does industrial farming have a negative environmental impact, but it is also detrimental to the economic well being of farmers. Consequently, I am now a firm believer in locally grown produce, and believe that this system, or at least a more logical one, should spread throughout the nation.

While they have a low initial cost on seeds and plants, this process will yield pounds of produce once their vegetables are ripe. This will not only provide them with a very healthy and fresh diet, but also saves them money as opposed to buying all of their fruits and veggies at the local supermarket. I do think that the local food movement is elitist in some regard because in most cases, only "elitist" people have enough money where they can freely spend on local organic food, since this food is much more expensive.

Living in such tight disgusting quarters is very hard to watch, but common. Just watching the men throw the baskets full of baby chicks and watching the cows being unable to move makes you question if eating meat is worth it. But with this animal treatment also comes with the realization of how easily disease is spread. The animals are so commonly shot up with as many antibiotics as they can which also concerns me. The thought of eating an animal full of disease and with just the right amount of antibiotics so it doesn't spread grosses me out. This treatment is not right and is not healthy to the animals or the people consuming them.

Mainly, I hadn't realized the extent of the industrialization of the food industry. However, now I have the understanding that similar to other industries, a majority of the agricultural industry is controlled by three or four companies. I also hadn't realized how small farms have been monopolized by these larger companies, and how small farmers are financially forced to comply with the large companies.
Overall, after seeing the film I am definitely more supportive of local farming and products.

Yes, this film causes me to rethink the idea of cheap food, in that no food is actually cheap, despite what the price tag may say. As Michael Pollan said, we must pay for food three times, so if the price tag for food is low, the true cost will come elsewhere. In order for the food to be cheap for buyers, producers must sell it at a lower cost than the cost or production, thus the government must step in and offer federal funds in the form of subsidies to cover the costs for farmers. Likewise, cheap food is produced with harmful chemicals, and processed unnaturally, and thus will have negative health repercussions for the consumer; essentially, no food is cheap, if it has a low monetary cost, than consumers will pay in other ways, through their tax dollars or their health.

With this knowledge, people can start buying organic foods that are healthier for our bodies. Buying organic foods also support the fight against climate change.

I think that FRESH is an important story to be telling right now because it shows where the meat and produce that we eat everyday comes from and shows how the animals are being treated and raised at a large scale farming. This video presents farmers that are working in ethical ways to treat their animals and how to organically grow crops that do not deplete the nutrients with the use of pesticides and fertilizers.

I agree with this statement because it is an accurate and unique way of thinking about the price we pay for food. For example, if I purchase processed chicken at the supermarket, it will be inexpensive. Because the chicken is processed, I will pay a greater price to my health because I am consuming unnatural and unhealthy things that are put into the chicken. I will pay a small price for the agricultural subsidy because the processed chicken is not supported by expensive funding on farms. On the other hand, if I buy an expensive fish at Whole Foods, I will pay more for the quality and freshness of the fish. The value of the fish is greater which makes it more expensive. Although I pay a greater price at the register, the fresh fish is benefiting my health. I also pay a greater price via agricultural subsidies because farms that produce fresh products require more funding.

I tend to buy the item that is the least expensive to say on the amount of money that I spend on food, this often times is not the best option for the environment or farmers.

The movie FRESH raised many doubts and concerns for me. Seeing the treatment of these animals was very concerning considering how inhumane and harsh the treatment was, and seeing as the industry still undergoes these practices (as they are happening right now) makes me doubt that people are informed enough to try and make significant change as to how these animals are treated. I am concerned for the future environmentally, socially, and health-wise. It is too often that you see warnings not to eat certain foods because of the disease that the food industry has created. It's even more mind-boggling to hear that the practices that people like Will Allen, are producing more, doing good for the environment, and giving back to the community. I have no doubt that if enough people become educated on this topic and the effects of the standard food industry, there will be backlash and change will occur.

One doubt that the movie raised for me was the idea of industrialization in the food industry, and how some companies that produce food care more about money and production than our actual health and what we are putting in our bodies. On such example of this is the feeding of dead cows to alive cows in order to make them grow faster for faster production. Not only does this show lack of attention to the food they are making, but it is also mistreatment of animals, which raises more concerns for me. It is very unnatural for cows to eat other dead cows. While the industry is aiming at higher production rates and cheaper food, they are putting our health at risk because their product is what we are eating, which makes me very nervous

Recently on social media, Fairlife was put on the spot light because of how they treated their animals. With the media being more present in people's day to day life, people can be find out more about the companies that they get their foods from and they can in instead find from the source how the animals are treated and what goes into making the produce that is for sale.

In order to produce food that is cheap, people most be exploited in the process. For example, while cheap food is being made and sold farmers could be displaced from their jobs, and those who are making and producing the cheap foods are likely only occupying part time jobs that are very cheap pay. This contradicts the idea of quality food, which costs money to make but can offer steady employment for farmers with far better pay than the production of cheap food lacking in quality.

The mistreatment of animals is bad for us too, because it creates an overwhelming amount of waste that could have otherwise been beneficial to the soil, and our soil is being pumped with synthesized nutrients and pesticides when all they need is already found in nature. The mistreatment of farmers is very prevalent by mr and mrs fox, because if they were to go against the big company they work for, all of their resources and pay would be take away. The cycle of abuse starts at the big companies in charge of the commercial or industrial farms, and ends with all people, animals, or environmental factors involved also being abused and mistreated.

We are told this time and time again, but it seems there is no escape from these foods as they come from supermarkets, restaurants, etc. and almost all of the food comes from these industrialized farms filled with harmful chemicals. Which also bring in the bacteria and disease created as the become immune to the chemicals being put into our foods. Which although happens on very few occasions I feel that the threat is always there and will be as long as these chemicals are in our foods.

The soup is delicious and really is one of the best ways to consume all the fresh foods. Also, we tend to make smoothies with the leftover vegetables we have, or if not then we use fresh fruits. Its a healthy and delicious way to keep yourself away from the unhealthy foods. If you have any leftover vegetables and fruits I suggest to make a soup or a smoothie.

As the population keeps expanding so does the industry but so does the ignorance towards the subjects shown in the film. Subjects, like the malnourishment of animals, animal abuse, the cramp spaces. I think it's important to show something like fresh to not only show these cruelties but to also show that if the population of the world was to continue growing then the current practices will become exhausted and will surely be unsustainable. I think that if this documentary was shown in more places to more people, then the change that was talked about in the movie will come sooner rather than later. It also shows people that there are other ways that are much more sustainable and environmentally friendly and overall healthier for everyone, which these practices are in fact currently being held a secret by the bigger companies out there.

One food related issue that I am concerned with is the consolidation of food produce between large companies. This concerns me for multiple reasons which includes, diseases, rights of farmers, and animal care . According to the documentary food is becoming more and more industrialized which is causing a few big companies to become the main source of food for the United States. This can be harmful because since these companies typically will grow one type of crop or animal in a large amount that leads them susceptible to diseases which they need to combat with antibiotics and pesticides. Now these pesticides can have harmful impacts on our general health and also this is how E-Coli outbreaks can spread because that one crop or animal product becomes infected and there is little alternatives to go to for food. Also with industrialized farms the animals are typically not cared for in a humanitarian way and are often abused. The industrialization of farms also makes it harder for small farms to compete as these big farms can sell their product for much less despite the environmental and health risks that are associated with them. Thus farmers who are growing their crops or cattle sustainably and humanely are forced into bankruptcy by these industrialized farms.

Like Timmy said earlier, it is a matter of time before viruses that infect the plant get stronger because of the heavy use of pesticides. After awhile the plants like humans, will build up a resistance to the pesticides and it will no longer work. I had not considered the possibility of industrially created bacteria and diseas before watching the film. After watching the film, i do think it is a possibility for industrially created bacteria and disease to exists. If people are not washing their produce before consuming, the pesticides and other bacteria will enter their bloodstream and may make them sick.

Yes, the movie has caused me to reconsider the notion of "cheap" food. I have learned from the movie that there is actually no such thing as "cheap" food as this food is being charged elsewhere. Specifically, these hidden costs include environmental degradation, damage to human health as well as to rural communities. Industrialization has made food cheaper, but has diminished the quality and the health benefit of food. With large demand of cheap food, farmers resort to growing cheap crops that can be efficiently grown. A crop that would fit this description would be corn. Farmers, consequently, are creating a monoculture, which is very threatening to the environment and "nature does not like monoculture," as stated in the film. Growing one crop consistently depletes and soil and thus, farmers resort to using many different pesticides and herbicides. Specifically, in rural communities, health is very threatened. Poverty is very prevalent in rural communities and as food choice is related to income, many of people living in rural communities do not have much of an option, and resort to buying "cheap" food that is not beneficial to their health.

As Julia said, fast foods and cheap foods do not have to be the same thing. Fast food chains can get their ingredients from organic and sustainable farms and still keep their prices reasonable. For example, McDonald's can get their poultry from sustainable farms instead of industrial farms or CAFOs. They don't even have to change their menu-- people still want to eat comfort food sometimes. If McDonald's were to get their food from sustainable resources, the food they would serve would be healthier and more nutrient-rich while still having the taste of comfort food that many people love.

The small percentage of farmers who maintain their farms and treat the animals the right way are bound for success, but many of these farms are local which means that not enough people are exposed to non industrial farm food. I feel that more people should get involved in the agriculture business, so there can be a greater amount of local food and sustainability.

I agree with the statement that a Farmers Market and having fresh foods accessible is definitely a privilege. This movement can help people living in "food deserts" have access to fresh foods by opening their eyes to the reality of the food that they are eating on a daily basis. Inspiring people to help with the local farms and markets. Not only can it raise awareness, but this movement can also open up places like the one that was shown in the film where they grew fresh crops and created a small farm using vertical space. Using a greenhouse and the right people to make fresh foods accessible to anyone can be a game changer. People will then begin to give back to these local farmers and hopefully allow them to expand not only in size but allow them to sell to supermarkets. Supermarkets usually sell fresh foods at a more expensive price which cause people to buy less sustainably produced food.

The two farmers that were introduced with the sustainable farm has shown me how much thought goes into this business. The different processes of moving the animals was very interesting on how well it mirrored the natural way. It was also nice to see the farmer who realized how terrible his treatment of the animals was after dealing with a disease himself. This farmers story opened my eyes on how the food system should be vs. what it is actually like. The film talked about how less efficient and worse quality an industrialized farm is compared to an organic one. This film has made me want more change in the food system.

The film helped me realize that buying organic foods are well worth the price if it means maintaining a healthier lifestyle along with protecting our environment. Because America has grown prone to buying cheap and processed foods, it lead to a change in farmers’ agriculture in order to maintain a steady income. Many now use fertilizers and pesticides to prevent crop disease or to keep away unwanted pests, just to lower the risk of losing one’s crop of the season. These crops are the ones that are sold at a cheaper price in grocery stores. Although they are more affordable, the pesticides can harm your health by leading to the development of asthma, Parkinson’s disease, or cancer. Not only do these chemicals affect our health, but they also impact the environment. Pesticides can contaminate soil, water, other vegetation, and toxify fish, birds, or any beneficial insect. This threatens biodiversity and weakens the vital natural systems humans depend on. This new knowledge inspired me to make the small smarter decisions that will make a huge positive impact on my health and the environment. In the end, buying expensive organically and ethically grown products is well worth the price.

Sustainable farming practices will always lead to healthier food option, so I always look for grass fed, free range products, and shop at the farmers market for locally grown vegetables, and meats. Of course while this helps me a great deal, it also gives money to promote gathering of food in a way that simulates the way these foods would grow naturally. So, I get to eat healthier and the process is self purifying.

The industrialization of natural processes could never have worked, we expected to do a better job than natural selection had done and that is simply unrealistic. Having animals grow in such close quarters and making them eat whatever happens to be cheapest is not a recipe for success. Being so close together is going to make sure that any diseases will be spread rapidly and feeding them antibiotics will just cause more resilient diseases to evolve, diseases that will infect our food. I absolutely do not think our current food system is safe, and it should definitely be changed and improved.

I believe most of the food that I eat today is relatively unsafe just due to the amount of additives and the bacteria and disease that are all found in our food today. With how industrial farming is done today, the livestock living in such close quarters and not being able to roam can cause a significant increase in the risk of disease or bacterial infections, and even when these industries try to prevent it by using antibiotics on the livestock, I do not see how this can be remotely healthy for humans to consume. Not only do livestock suffer, but the agricultural side of farming does too. From farms using pesticides to try and prevent pests from eating crops, to using fertilizers to make them grow faster and better, the amount of contamination and pollution in the fruits and vegetables that we consume is considerably unhealthy and unsafe. Obviously there are no short term or immediate affects done onto us by these products, but they can still pose a great threat to our long term health.

As I watched the documentary, watching some parts was hard like how on some farms the chicks are packed closely together and there were some injured and dead and were not cleaned up. It gives me a lot of incentive to buy food from local farmers because I know that I can do research on them and visit them to make sure that the food from there is created safely and in a sanitary way.

When people have a very limited amount of money to spend on food, they often lean towards cheaper and more energy-dense foods to help keep them full for longer. This usually excludes local foods due to their high price point, making the local food movement elitist, only allowing high-income families to benefit from fresh and nutrient rich foods. However, in some countries huge produce and meat companies do not dominate the industry, allowing for locals foods to be more abundant and therefore cheaper. I was shocked to hear this coming from the big industry farmer, because if nobody wants to work for him, isn't that a sign that he's doing something wrong? The working environment on his farm is so poor that people are forced to work for him and kill/skin chickens to make a small profit. It is possible that the poor living conditions that are forced on the chickens have an effect on the workers and their wellbeing. Nobody wants to work on a farm with suffering animals, but nobody has a problem with consuming an animal who has suffered. I really thought it was interesting that the farmer and his wife saw nothing wrong with their farming process, but avoided going into detail on the animals living conditions and workers conditions. They are really the only ones benefiting from their business while animals, workers, and peoples health suffer as a result of it.

I feel that more of our decisions should be based around environmental impact, and really how harmful my decisions are on the environment.

As stated by Nick above, I feel that corner convenience stores have an obligation to sell fresh produce in many "food deserts" around the country, places where there is no healthy produce for sale. To get this fresh produce into these deserts, I believe that one/ the federal government could risk high importation costs, but the government could also require municipalities to plant and sell fresh produce. In addition to this, gardens established by the towns or government could help balance the lack of fresh produce found in inner cities.
