You work 6 days of the week with no rest. There are times when you're starved and whipped for senseless things. Where would you turn? Christianity was the only hope for many of these folks. Some believed in it and others didn't because of the life events they were facing. Slaves had to even hide their beliefs from their masters because their masters didn't believe in Christianity. 
In our generation it's very different now. There are so many different religions. People praise their "lord" in an abundance of ways. It has most definitely changed in many aspects in the world.
