-becoming the education an "aesthetic experience": first of all, changing the timetable and the places of teaching (all days from 8 h to 17 h, and in immersive classroom, in lab or in the nature); breaking the barriers between school, museum and industry in order to make the process of knowledge "not filtered" only by the teachers of the specific subjects, it's fondamental to operate in according to interdisciplinary way and through the tecnology devices; cancelling the marks and favouring the collaborative learning.

In my opinion the first thing that should be changed is the structure of the classroom itself. Often we have a structure like the one of the 3rd Industrial Revolution office, while now nobody works like this in a modern company. If you change the structure then you can change the methods and the collaboration can be easier, so we can go from a teacher-centered classroom to one students-centered.

There are cases where I agree with some of Sir Ken Robinson's thoughts. For example, it is a paradigm for us to raise generations in our own time with perceptions and facts. But for someone who observes the training from outside and cannot follow the changes that will occur in the field with these observations, the existence of the schools in such a sharp manner is not realistic and meaningful to me.

I work with age group 11 -12 and there is At least one kid usually more than one using those kinds of drugs to increase their ability to focuslessons, usually they are diagnosed to be hyperactive. I dont think this diagnosis should be so simple. There shpuld be something wrong with the system. They are not all the time hyperactive, some of them are just kids and bored at school, thats all. No need to meficinate them to turn them into look around like a dead fish. They are just kids and sitting so long hours on the same desk is hard for them.

The world is changing, and the education system certainly needs to change as well. The problem is the amount of information that is growing in geometric progression - and the physiological limitation of the human brain to operate with this informations avalanche. I founded some other critical analysis about Sir Ken’s views.
IMO first of all, the world has always been changing.
So this situation is not unique.
Changes always take place in different areas at the same time.

The motto of our school (in theory, at least), is based on a (approximated) quote from Socrates: "the education should be the calming of a flame and not the filling of a vase". This just about sums up Ken Robinson's idea. BUT, happily for us, we don't medicate our students (well, the parents don't) - yet - but we struggle everyday with their increasing lack of attention. But I guess the deeper problem is the lack of MOTIVATION, because our society only gives them (and the media promotes mainly) the anti-educational examples: people who have "made it" (meaning made up a fortune, a name - however tainted by controversies or scandals, an economic or political position in society, mainly based on an IMAGE) very quickly and very easily, without much effort, apparently, using all sorts of social connections as "crutches".
The thing, I think, we need to "clean up" and develop, as teachers, in the students' minds is not WHY and FOR WHAT they learn, but HOW they learn and how to ACTIVELY CONTROL AND EXPAND their attention span, their focus, and their ability to tone down the "noise of the world" in order to listen to their own thought processes.

Sir Robinson is right. The 21st Century needs students with skills adapted to the Third Industrial Revolution.
For example, the Romanian Ministry of Education wants to bring a series of changes to the Romanian vocational education system, after finding that the graduates dont have the skills that employers are looking for, and the number of those who choose this education system is declining year by year.
In 2014, the possibility of organizing dual-level vocational education, after compulsory education, was introduced on the basis of a labor contract.
Dual training combines workplace learning with a company with education and training in a school with the aim of obtaining professional qualification while continuing with the studies.
Finally, we can't meet yet the needs of the market, in Romania.

I remember first watching this talk. I was blown away by the fresh ideas and their boldness. I do not think that Sir Robinson means that children should only learn what they like, I think he meant that we should elevate the education to a level where it becomes likable to most. We should focus more on teaching children how to interpret facts, think about causes and effects and how different phenomena affect our lives. All sciences are fun and exciting if we only can show the magic of knowledge. Let's face it - most of today's educational systems are created to be boring and are based on repetition for better memorizing facts we have instant access to via our mobile phones. Children are naturally curious and it is our job to keep this curiosity alive.

There is a great deal of concern today about how we should educate the children and young people of our societies to be satisfactorily adapted to the economic model of the twenty-first century, and also to have a sense of cultural identity and retain their cultural roots, process of globalization.

Some of the pupils in starving countries still can not find a pencil to write or book to read while the others have lots of opportunities. I'm against industrializing education. Training should only be done in a nice location to find work and to reach the office. Education should not be made to earn money, to earn money. Teachers working in the curriculum system forget the children who need to grow while dealing with the issues that need to be trained. Forgotten children are losing their joy, dream, emotion and thought. It turns out that the student model that has entered the exam mode. There is no vital skills training, information is loaded, google answers, such as answering a product.

Education is still based on the same principles as three centuries ago when mass education was introduced. The problem is that there is not a solid proposal for a new educational system right now, we are still trying to find our pace through new educational competences and skills.
On the other hand the teachers and the society in the majority of countries are not ready yet to move forward on education.

I strongly agree with the idea that Ken Robinson provides about the need of changing education. It is urgent to renew what is as old as an educational system that was developped three centuries ago. However, the fact that he's never being a teacher makes me think he might be proposing ideas which are difficult to come to an end. Also, I agree with him when he states that the current system kills divergent thinking. In my opinion, we're too worried to finish the whole book and to explain all the concepts that we stick to the plan and we forget that kids need to think. I disagree with Tom Bennett when he says that a system where music and art are present cannot be a system that kills creativity. It definitely can, when the programme of the subject doesn't allow students to develop their creativity and they just copy-past everyhting.

Children evolve, and what interests them at 5 often differs from what they are interested in at 17. Guiding a child for what interests him at age 5 and letting him go his way further jus on that, would only create an uninformed being, who specializes too early. I think education is really important. Yes, it should be more personalized than it is, but we will agree that reachign that point is very difficult. Each child learns in a certain way, but is part of our development to get to know each of us. I do not agree that theres is just a single answer, because there are indeed many correct answers. In my humble oppinion, we should change the way our students learn some subjects, and try to be more practical. In my school, we are encouraging the students to work in collaborative teams, assuming different roles, such as coordinator, secretary, moderator and spokespeople, in order they are conscious of their responsability in any project. So, they develop very complex problem- based learning in a real way.

Watching the video just thinking that Ken Robinson was also educated in the "outdated" system... It is important to teach for the future but also we need the have in mind the past knowledge. We have to develop XXI century skills but we should not dis-consider the good things from the old education systems.

I mostly agree with Sir Ken Robinson that the educational systems are still based on an industrial and modernist paradigm, they are outdated and not suitable for the 21st century. I am not completely informed about education systems for whole world, however necessary job skills in my country cannot match with required job skills in developed countries. So, our educational system may still work in somehow. On the other hand, new millennium children (generation Z) are different learning and comprehension skills. There are lots of stimulus such as smart phones, computer, and social media in their daily life. This situation makes them not to focus on anything like school staff. In order to appeal these new generation kids’ attention, we need to revise all courses’ curricula and connect all lessons contents with each other by somehow. We all as teachers need to keep up with today’s technologies in order to use same language with our students and try to understand walking in their shoes actually.

I partly agree with Sir Ken R. Yes, our traditional education system is outdated and doesn't meet the requirements for 21st century. We need to change the whole education philosophy, specify new skills, values, beliefs, habits and implement new teaching techniques. I watched the video of Sir Ken and read Bennett's article and find interesting ideas in both; creativity can not be taught but it can be taught to be more creative by showing examples of creative people and trying to carry out activities that do not necessarily provide a single answer or jobs in which students are given ample freedom. We are in a period of transition, things will change, more or less quickly. I only wonder if and how much I will be supported during this passage because no one was born taught. It's all a balance between knowledge, skills, creativity, personal predisposition ... it's no easy.

I strongly agree with Sir Ken Robinson and I`ve read 2 of his books: "Creative Schools" and " Out of our Minds". I agree with him saying that our educational system isn`t preparing students for the job market. And one of the first things we should learn and improve is learning collaboration and teaching collaborative learning. That's why I really loved Co-Lab MOOC launched by you, EUN, last year and I really hope you will launch it again in the future. We need to learn this better.

I partially agree. The division in subjects and the "productivity" model and assessment of results need to be improved. However, teaching is far from being easy. It is a contextualized task, constructed in response to the particularities of a given school (and community for that matter). IMHO Most of the approaches that are being followed at the moment are not as bad as Robinson claims. Plus, I am a wee tired of this negative outlook on our job as teachers.

I have to agree that the education system is old and has to be changed. I think the technology progress has driven the new generations away from making things by their own, and on the other hand we all have to learn to use technology. Education has lost its aim: we do not educate, we train kids, but for what? Moral values and feelings have been sacrificed for more money:

I do not entirely agree with the ideas of Sir Ken Robinson. The purpose of education, organized and conducted by the education system, is not only to prepare students for their future profession. Education combines with behavior building and should help children become complete people. It has to give them a scientific point of view into the world, to build eternal human values, to form a number of social skills and moral resistances. Education incorporates children into the world of the adults, and this world is not just a profession and a job. Obtaining digital skills should not be the center of their training. It is only one of the necessary skills needs for realization and a meaningful life, but it is not even essential. Education is a conservative system that is not so bad.

This factory-model, school system has highly compartmentalized learning into subject areas, and students are expected to learn the same content in the same amount of time.

It is not a matter of agreeing or not with Sir Robinson, it is clear that a part of the world lives with an economic system that has created strong inequalities. Obviously the base of education is the acquisition of fundamental competencies in writing, reading, reckoning etc... then, using proper motivation, stimulating curiosity, the pupils should be able to afford new challenges for new jobs.
A balanced mix of knowledge, skills, behaviour, methodology must be achieved also through the cooperation of families that support with institutions the choices of pupils.

First, I would say we teach to get the best of our students, to prepare them for the future, teaching them to be good persons, people with their own ideas, to allow them to develop their skills, to solve problems, to help the others…. (instead of telling we prepare children for new jobs) and everything can help during the journey. The schools have to adapt to the coming future; but that does not mean changing everything. Our teaching experience throughout the history will help us about the things we have to improve or change and the ones we can keep. So it is important not only having an open mind, but also having experience. So theorist should discuss their ideas with the teachers that every day work in a school and know the reality (as Bennett would say).

I partial agree with Sir Ken Robinson. First of all if we think that medicine can solve behavior problems, we're wrong.I think people usualy exagerate the interpretation of children behavior. We should take into consideration the stages of child's personality development, as Piaget said.(No, Piaget is not obsolete). On one hand Sir Ken Robinson is right saying that our educational system has to focus on real life problems and that should develop critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and problem solving skills to our students. I have participated in some workshops that educate lesson plans for growing up diverge thinking and creativity in students. Workshops was held by PI institute (Canada) in CERN and LAMAP (France) in Iran. Thanks Dave & Greck and Anne & Patric for their novel experiences. When I used methods like O.P.E. or IBSE in my classes, I realized their advantages compared with traditional teaching.

I agree with Sir Ken Robinson in some points. I agree that the current educational system in many countries, like here in Greece, is prioritizing mechanical knowledge based on recalling and memorizing procedures. There are a few activities in the curriculum, promoting team work, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving, but apart from being very very few, in the end, the assessment of the students is totally based on the old methods of who can memorize best and who writes down what the text book says! There is a significant urge for rearranging the current educational system, but this is not easy. The teacher in a classroom of 20 and 25 students cannot use personalized teaching methods and students cannot be taught only what they desire. Furthermore, not all subjects or topics can be taught only with hands-on activities or with challenging ways of learning. Another thing to mention is that we should not base all our teaching in ICT and technology. These are only some of the means that a teacher can use. To sum up, there is a great need to reform the educational system, but we cannot reject all these parameters that have worked well in the past.

I'm not completely agree with Sir Robinson, I think he's right when he says that the young's brains are turned off by all the devices that apparently light them up. As a teacher today, I observe that students/children are increasingly struggling to keep their focus and concentration. Diagnosis and diagnosis say the same thing. I do not think that it is enough to reform the educational system, we need to change everything from parents to teachers.
We can change the way to teach but a good teacher is a good teacher no matter what way he/she teach. If you bring your student in your world the show must go on. We have to be really carefully also thinking that the technology can make the different in teaching.

In Portugal the school program defined by the Ministry of Education does not always fit the reality lived by the students, in schools that often lack material resources adequate to the requirements of the imposed program. Teachers are required to know how to manage classes in a way that captivates students for supposedly uninteresting subjects for them, but without which they often lack the foundation for the individual in the future to be able to solve problems without having to be always dependent on technological gadgets. Being able to be self-sufficient to solve problems, being able to adapt to new demands continuously throughout life, are basic tools for any citizen of the future. I also think that there is too much information going around both inside and outside the school. The problem is students don't know where they can use or apply the things they learn in school. Also students are receiving too much information and they are watching about everything but they can hardly find time to apply or perform what they learn. From my point of view, we need schools because students become socialized there and they can learn from each other about everything, lessons, life and people. Also latest instructional strategies enable students to discuss, analyze and create. As a solution, the number of subjects and overloaded curriculum should be lessened. There should be more time for students to apply what they learn. For example we need gardens where students do gardening or school theatre where they can dance or act.

I agree with Sir Robinson because the growth and stability of the global economy depends on the capacity of education systems in the world, to train students and students to help them reach high levels of performance so that all have opportunities for jobs . Unfortunately, with few exceptions, school systems have not yet been changed to adapt to current trends and technologies. Although the vision is global, the road to 21st-century education must be made by each country. While some should change the evaluation system, others teach the system. In our country, it is argued that the reform in education must start from the number of students. I agree with Sir Ken Robinson view: Educational systems need to evolve. Unfortunately, they have a great inertia which difficults change, so it is necessary to properly think which priorities do we have and set a realistic yet optimistic plan to achieve them. Self-awareness of both teachers and students should be a core aspect leading the change.

I mostly agree with Sir Ken Robinson. I do think that our education systems are outdated and that we need to reform them (my country has been trying to do that for years now without success). Some European countries are already trying to change their school systems (eg. some schools don’t have classes, students learn what they choose to, they are all together, they don’t have uniform classrooms…). But I don’t think we should go completely the other way from it. At least not at once. We need to get there gradually. Our politicians tried several time to implement some new curriculum in our schools and universities, without good preparations. They only achieved mess and chaos. It takes a lot of planning, not implementing all of the changes at once, but gradually. Also not everything in the old education system is bad. Perhaps we can create a system which is combined of the best parts of both the old and the new one.

Looking at and listening to the vídeo, I absolutley agree with Sair. Ken Robinson. From my experience as a teacher children nowadays do not learn as 25 years ago or as I learnt. They are stimulated eavery day with digital devices (mobile phones, tablets,…) and immediate news through social networks. And when you have a student in the class that is somewhat more active, or isn´t learning or attentive to traditional teaching the problema is a disorder. Many Teachers do not know how to change their traditional ways of teaching , but mosto f all I think teachers are tired and demotivated towards teaching for there is a curricula you must follow, educational programs, testing/exames and society/parents are looking only for success, so they do not feel confident and able to change. But I think that a change is necessary, we teachers cannot continue to look aside, we must face the challange of the 21st century in education and prepare our students for a more cooperative, project learning, developing their creativity and critical thinking.

Thanks to nowadays advanced technology, children have access to huge amount of information and data available on the internet, they also have amazing digital abilities, but they don't understand the process behind the devices in their hands and they are also too young for separating good from wrong, truth from fake. I agree with some of his ideas, I disagree with some of them. For example children do not know what information they need throughout their lives. Therefore, I would like to have the information they need to be given by the curriculum. However, I do'nt favor the theoretical delivery of these gains.

Sir Ken Robinson tells us about the several weak points our educational system and I mostly agree with what he says (killing the creativity, anchored in the past, excess of ADHD diagnosis, etc). However, I do not think he gives a real solution of the problems he points out. How do we prepare our students for the future if we do not know how the future will be? It is a very complex question which needs attention and time to discuss about it. What I have liked the most of the video is when he speaks about collaborative work and divergent thinking.

I totally agree with Sir Ken Robinson. We cannot teach for XXI century job market from a perspective of XIX century. Life is changing very fast these days, technology are changing it. But schools paradigm didn’t change, so we are in the past and want to teach for the future. Long time known this video from Sir Ken and all his theories (in fact it comes from 2010).
Before telling you my opinions, let me write a couple of words of context: I have been teaching for 20+ years and have engaged many innovation programs at my school; I consider myself and innovator in education (and I have been lucky as my school administrators have let me do this). I have been hearing all-class gurus telling about the future of education, about the big changes that are goin to happen in the next few years (do you remember how far did it sound the 2020 horizon in the 1990's?). And from my experience, the biggets change in the world we live in has been the multitude of tech devices that are around us (we keep driving explosion motors cars, being electric ones a rarity and there is no "flying car" as someone promised us).
With all this in mind, let me say that Mr Robinson can be right in the 50% things related with the relationship between students and teachers, and with the way schools are structured to be better learning places... But regarding creativity and the negative effect of learning "traditional" subjects on it... I do not think so: or is there that in previous generations have not been creative people developing new and awesome ways of thinking/acting/doing/...?
Of course the education system needs to evolve and adapt to the changing society, but maybe more debate from the inside and less theoretical wisdom could help to chose a better path for that evolution.

When I first watched the animation I was really impressed because of the presentation. But as I read Bennett's arguments and learnt that Robinson never taught in school, I ve just realized whats going on. Sure, education is so important that it could not be only in teachers hand. Everybody should be included in it. But people should listen teachers too. On the other hand I believe educational should be dynamic and look after needs of the society as it should be an open system. The methods may vary but I think the ultimate goal of education is to raise good people.

I read Mr. Tom Bennett’s article and some Sir Ken Robison’s articles and I think we must find the balance between the two points of view.

It’s important to encourage and nurture creativity, but it’s also important to make known to the children what others have already discovered and the historical past, otherwise, they will "waste time trying to invent the wheel" instead of using creativity more effectively and efficiently.

I think is very important to encourage children to think critically, to try to solve the problems autonomously, but with solid foundations resulting from the whole past of mankind, which should encompass political, philosophical, social, scientific, artistic, ...

Regarding the subject of ADHD addressed in the video, I totally disagree with the ease with which a child is medicated! I think children should have less time in classrooms, “attached” to a chair, with artificial lights, with well established and oriented activities, and have more time to play, where they would have to solve among themselves the problems that arose, the opportunity to spend more time in contact with nature, climbing the trees, banging knees, sunbathing ...

I totally agree with Tom Bennett when he says that “Robinson doesn’t have a full picture of the public education”. We need to be on the ground, interact with the children, be a teacher, to be able to have better supported opinion.

Instead of a philosophical video by someone who isn't a teacher himself, you could also read some works by Rousseau like Émile, on education. Maybe you get a warm fluffy feeling. I am a school teacher and my experience agrees with the concept that every year education is increasingly standardised and kids, who are living in the most stimulating age in history, fail to see the point of going to school. They focus mainly in ‘finding the right answers to pass the tests’ rather than about stimulating divergent thinking. In my opinion, the education system has to be reformed. Well, as most of fellow participants, I agree with Ken Robinson .... not fully though.

I don't quite buy the idea of teaching kids to prepare them for the job market. My educational philosophy (mostly forward and inspired with IBO philosophy of life long learning) aspires to nurture life long learners, and that's where I think STEM education might benefit their goals. Developing skills for the job market will follow.

However, Ken opens up an interesting debate on the aspects of today's learning/teaching world.

As many of us fully understand and would buy the idea. I think incorporating and highlighting STEM ideas into our daily teaching will create inquisitive minds. That satisfies many curious minds and gives food for further thoughts/research.

I think that we must necessarily prepare our students for a more cooperative learning, developing their creativity and critical thinking, but I also think that we can not ignore bases such as history or grammatical language.
Music, which is art and creativity, also needs technique and music theory.

I think that the classical education system has to be revolutionized indeed, there are a lots of changes to be done, we need to focus more on learning through cooperation, more on individualization of the education, more on developing critical thinking oriented on problem solving, communicational skills, emotional intelligence, creativity and divergence, but I also think that the students need to know some basis; even when I expect them to be creative with the basis, or to deny it, to entirely change it or to discover something new, they still need some tools.

Developing only hard skills / knowledge / is not enough for a good star in the labor market. Pupils and students need to develop soft skills such as: group collaboration, creativity, communication skills. They are just as important as hard competences. Permission for errors, reflection on what has been done, reduces, eliminates stress related to learning, develops creativity. It allows you to re-analyze the problem and look for new solutions. Truly we live in a world that changes really fast and yes we teach kids from past. Everything changes fast but our schools, classrooms and teachers are same. Sir Ken Robinson has a valid point to make when he says we are following the Industrial world. Today, I am catering to a school with 3500 students and there are 40 students per class with one teacher. It is practically challenging to tweak curriculum to every single student and develop his potential. Also assessment pattern needs to change dramatically to suit different learning needs and with National board exams, it is difficult. Nevertheless, teachers are aware of the future needs and are trying to prepare students through thoughtful projects.

When talking about current educational system...what are we really talking about? My own experience has shown to me that in every school sth different goes on. I taught in a Spanish school where all the teachers tried to implement new methods to teach, and I must say that the students developped interesting skills. I am currently in Germany: the private international school works with STEM and try to challenge their students, to have them critical to the reality. The public German school my children attend to....they copy what the teacher says, they MUST learn what in the book is written....but on the other hand the questions they face on some exams are really good ones, they need to think about what they supposedly learnt. I would say, when the teachers have the tools they really can push their students. But how children learn has nothing to do with the public education system but with the resources and the leading people in every school. Teachers adapt to circumstances, so do students.
Anyway, we all are humans and eventhough the education system cannot be perfect, we are capable of evolving, adapt and develop our skills according to circumstances. I don´t see there a big problem

I mostly agree with him, but I think that he should work with children in order to have opinions about education. In my country, changes are made by people who have no idea how it is to work with children. The decision makers only try to copy what happens in other countries. Also they are poorly organised and they expect us to apply stupid changes yesterday. On the other hand, teachers are old and apply old methods and also complain about children not listening to them. They jump to conclusions and try to disciplinate and put etiquettes on children who are just BORED by them. When the children do not pay attention, when they disturb the lesson, when they don't progress how they should, THEY ARE BORED and it's the teacher's fault. I believe that it is not necessary to create general theories that speak of all teachers and of all the school systems.
I think it's true that we need to review the methodologies and the designs because the new society requires new skills.
It is a society that is too fast, unjust, not always welcoming and very competitive.
However, I believe that we need to get into the schools more, live alongside the students and, above all, the teachers.
Teachers, at least in Italy, are very stressed.
The competitions to recruit the teachers are very long and convoluted.

Indeed creativity was killed as in factories in the past, hands were needed not so much brains, in banks or the army people were required to apply and obey and not to think too much. In a time where tihings evolve fast and complex problem solving is needed, to be able to think widely, children need to stay creative (which does not mean to be artistic only, creativity can also take place in finance or the police), and above all they need to be motivated. Indeed working in groups help growth, also learning how the brain works is helping children a lot: a sort of "aha" moment where they realise there is not such thing as someone naturally good t maths, but that failing is part of the process and that perseverance pays. Not only should you have creative adults but also you need to have adult that have an education. In Brussels where I live too many teanagers end school with no diplome at all.

Nevertheless, I do believe that the idea of public education was one of the most powerful ideas that illustration had. Unfortunately, to achieve this objective, or make this objective an efficient one, education had suffered an industrialization process. Teach and learn how to read and write is no more the ultimate objective of the 21st century education system and a new model is needed. Sir Robinson has a vision that is connected with the XXI century, and I definitively agree with him. The big problem is that school in Italy (I don't know about other countries) requires to the teachers both: Come on, use the new tecnology, teach new skills, encourage work group and problem solving, but in the same time requires the completion of the program, because the students will have to do a final examination (Esame di Stato) that is still almost completely about cognition of academic themes

I agree with Sir Ken Robinson in some ways. The educational systems are outdated and not suitable for the 21^st century since they decrease the divergent thinking and creativity of the children as they grow older. So there must be radical changes in order to adapt the 21^st century.

The system divides people as academic and non academic but does not give any different types of education that satisfy the needs of non academic people.

General public education is important for the societies to learn their culture, gain basic skills and understand the world but detailed academic education can be related with the interests of individuals. We live in information era. The people can find any information they need from the internet. The general public education systems fill the individuals minds and time with many information they don’t even know where or when to use. So the children don’t see any purpose in going to school and don’t want to go.

Education system must give children opportunity to explore, imagine, create, express themselves, cooperate with others and find more time for arts and sports in order to prepare them for the future.

I don’t totally agree Sir Ken Robinson’s thoughts about the concept of schools. There must be some discipline and order where you teach people some skills but the concept of classroom can be replaced with an atmosphere for the children to feel and express themselves more comfortable and free. Also the children need to be at certain age to learn some skills so I believe they must be educated by age groups. There will always be exceptions for this but the system must be prepared to handle all the exceptions.

I believe some changes have to be done, I see it with my students from different schools and the teaching methods in Math and Physics haven't changed from what I remember in my times despite most of them have now smartphones, internet connection and other technological aids. Governments everywhere are trying to improve education. For decades, the main strategies have been standardization, competition and incessant testing, especially in literacy, mathematics and science. It’s been a partial success at best and in many ways a dismal failure.

I agree with him, the proper purposes of assessment are to support and improve student learning and to provide an informative record of their achievements. There are many better ways to do this than through the barren rituals of bubble tests.

I agree...I remember growing up as a child wanting to do so many things. It all sounds wonderful until you hit the real world & realize that you have to go to a great school, learn a specific skill & get a specific job, work your way up the corporate ladder whether its relevant for yourself, society, or not. Often times you see people doing something they have to do these days rather than something they want to do. It's intrinsic to the system as you have to work in order to survive. I think that our educational system really is bad and needs to change. But I somewhat agree and with what Mr. Bennet said... You could make your primarly target creativity, collaboration, digitalization,... all the fancy stuff... but even they need to have some structure. You can't just say: "5 of you, make a group, solve the Earth's pollution problem!" What is group, how it works, what is pollution, who makes it, what ideas already exist... On the one hand, I agree with Robinson because I believe that our educational system still retains many of the characteristics of the industrial paradigm. In most of the classrooms, teaching is based on memorization and mechanical teaching of algorithms is implemented. I’m sorry, but as an educator I believe students first need to prepare for this rapidly changing life as human beings, and then obviously, they need to prepare to get a job that may not even exist today… Thus, we can’t think of productivity as it was thought of years ago, but on how to solve problems which come up every now and then, and which are being ignited by how technology is evolving. In term of underdeveloped or even developing countries I would agree with him. We are not preparing our kids for the future they are about to face. I think a small step could also bring a big change like leaving the students towards self organized learning in groups and teacher work as facilitator and his job remains to scaffolding only. We implemented this self organized learning in our 12 grade classes and a kid like adhd is coming towards track of focus.

Over the years I have seen schools implement teaching and learning methods and assessments that are suitable for supporting students of the 21st century. The most important thing about our current education system that needs to change is its flexibility. When I say flexibility, I mean in what skills we are expecting our students to demonstrate and what educators are assessing for. The educational system in Poland leaves much to be desired. But it also has many pluses. Some examples below.

Minuses:

- the class-lesson system, i.e. the Prussian model of teaching is still in force,

- standardized external exams, force teaching according to the key,

- politics begins to dominate at school and it does not do any good,

- a very extensive core curriculum and a small number of hours of classes generate haste, which is not conducive to learning,

- teacher education and training requires changes.

Pros:

- in many schools, creative principals and teachers introduce innovative teaching methods, e.g. Montessori pedagogy, formative assessment,

- science centers, e.g. the Copernicus Science Center, are established like mushrooms after the rain, whose programs stimulate children and young people to develop towards the future,

- gymnasiums that existed before the reform of the education system put a lot of emphasis on cooperation, project activities, practical and other important competences - it was a good direction for changes, but they have been stopped.

- teacher education is slowly starting to change, but too slowly.

Do I agree with Ken Robinson? Yes and no. His considerations partially reflect what is happening in education systems.
