Newton Knight and the Legend of the Free State of Jones

By-Mississippi Historical Society

This article totally helped me in comparing the movie to reality and I knew it would be a reliable source and a very direct source as it was written by the Mississippi historical society, so there information was most likely accurate as it is the same state in which the movie took place. The article is very detailed and also mentioned its sources which is helpful when you are trying to track down original documents to further extend your research. It helped me understand the movie from a historical perspective and I learned that the movie was pretty accurate.

This was a very detailed and long article that gave me a lot of insight to the movie as the person that was providing the information was the producer of the movie himself. He actually took a trip to Jones County, Mississippi to talk to relatives and family of Newt as Newt only passed away in 1920 so the information would be reliable.. The director wanted to stay true to history and also went to places that Newt was himself, like the swamp that the men holed up in. I also got to learn about the societal character of Jones and how some people have some biased and very racist opinions, even now of blacks and it lead to me having a greater understanding of the environment that New was in and that makes me appreciate his actions even more. Learning about how the director wanted to shoot the movie and his thought process allowed me to have a new angle on the movie and I could now view it with new and historically and locally correct information. It allowed me to see how his vision had influenced the movie and the character Newt himself

If I where to criticize the movie at all I think that I would start with the lack of background information that we first see at the beginning of the movies. It kind of starts in seem in the middle of the war and does not key into background information of the main character pretty much till the last like 30 minutes of the movie and that was a little bit of a let down. A second thing that I would criticize is the movies plot structure. In a way, it resembles a documentary, which is fine if audience interested but a their are much more alluring plot structures that appeal to a wider crowd.

Civil War Enlightening

In learning about the civil war, we generally focus on the South vs. the North and how and why the war started, but we never tend to focus on individuals in the war. This movie genuinely really changed and broadened my perspective of the civil war. I think in looking at the war, as we do with many other aspects of our lives we tend to generalize or gloss over the small parts or the bigger picture but forgot that a lot of smaller pieces help make up the whole, or that when looking at things on a big scale we miss important details. Mississippi was an exemption to a lot of the South in the fact that only 12% of the population where slaves, meaning that when Mississippi left the Union, it was mostly the decision of rich farmer or plantation owner and therefore a lot of those who where drafted where opposed to it and a lot seemed to not want this war. When you think of the South, you forget how many individuals made up the South and that even within states, they had varying opinions on the war. In the movie, we really see this divide and how the war, at least in some parts of the South was honestly an economical decision. In the movie I learned that a law was passed that if you had 20 or more "Negros" you did not have to fight in this war, at which point in the movie, Newt left. The fact that he was able to take over three counties shows how much resistance there was to this war and that on both sides there was internal struggles.

The main idea of this movie was to showcase the civil war in the South in a different light then what a lot of people look at it and to enlighten people of the fact that the South was just as full of different people with different morals and views then at a high school. The movie shows this in how Newt actually lead a rebellion against the Union to the point where he was able to take over three counties and declared succession.

The movie takes place in Mississippi in the 1860's in what starts in the middle of the civil war. Newt is a soldier that dessert the army to go home after a new law is passed that makes the war" a rich mans fight, and a poo mans battle". Once he gets home and back to Jones County, he starts to make a stand against confederate soldiers who are abusing their power. It eventually escalate to the point to which he has to hide out in a swamp and he slowly starts to build a rebellion against the confederate commanders who are terrorizing the townsfolk. Newt ends up being able to take over three counties and even gets supplies from the Union to help him fight, and they lead a successful rebellion until the war is over. After that, Newt had kids with a slave that he meet in Jones County and he ended up marrying her and being appointed a position to enforce that the slaves got freed that had the right to be freed. Also his grandson went to trial for being 1/8 "Negro" , but ultimately nothing happened.

Movie Review

I would personally not recommend this movie for entertainment if you are not a person who generally enjoys history or at the very least battles and wars, as this movie does have a more realistic feel to it and not as much as Hollywood bait. It does have a few famous actors and it is definitely an A rated movie and for a war movie it is portrayed with quality. This movie is almost like a documentary, just put into a fictional movie. The movie is a bit long so for some, if it does not hold there attention they might not be entertained all the way to the end, as even though there is a plot to the movie, it is more so following Newt's life so it is not set up like most movies with one dramatic big climax and then a peaceful resolution. However, overall it's a pretty great movie and I would recommend it to fellow history lovers.

Hollywood vs. History

In historical fictional movies I like to see real history and an effort to keep true to the past and characters actual story portrayed and with movie, after doing some research, I was pleasantly surprised. With most "a true story" or "based on a true story" you find out the half the movie was just Hollywood embellishment. However, in this movie a decent amount of the events that take place in the movie actually occurred in real life and those that where wheat you could call embellishments did not take away from the original people, only portrayed them as they where in real life by using similar events or slightly different versions of what really happened. For example, Newt really did hide in the swamp with a group of rebelling people and they did join up with slaves, along with Newt calling it a "rich mans war, and a poor mans fight". They also where historically accurate in the Newt had slaves relay information to them to help them out against the confederates. Some ways in which the movie was not historically accurate is when Newt saves his "Nephew" in the beginning of the movie, as they did not happen in real life, but this is ways to show Newts character more than anything and I believe in doing this they appropriately portrayed him.

In the movie, you progressively see the confederates hunting more and more desperately for Newt and getting more drastic as time moves on. Described in the newspaper is the fact that to the South, for those in charge at least the deserting was a very big thing to do and you would get severely punished for it. In the movie, eventually, when the fighting gets bad enough they hang some of the rebels and leave them there as a message to those who dare to defy them. Very similar to in this article, they sometimes did the same thing and left people to hang to send a message. To the South, deserting was a big thing and got you in a lot of trouble because they did not have an ample amount of men in the war and they even enlisted very very young people to join the war and I think it goes to show that in the movie it's very much the same, to the point that it's almost identical in situation and makes you understand the rage these rebels had at a 13 year old being hung.
