Jeff Sallet’s presentation was extremely entertaining and inspiring. Being an alumni from the Isenberg School of Management, Jeff was able to connect with us students in a way where he described how passionate and hard working UMass students are. He explained the importance of real world experience in the Accounting field and how the skills you learn from actually working in differently jobs is what sets you apart from other candidates with a possibly higher GPA or academic knowledge. Jeff stressed the importance of leadership and how someone’s who is a good leader needs to not only be strong, but also be kind and listen to others in order to learn as much as they can. This presentation opened my eyes to the field of forensic accounting, a field that I never pictured myself in. After hearing about Jeff’s many exciting but diffcult cases, I was inspired to further explore all the different careers I can be a part of as an Accounting major. He captured the importance ornament public speaking and excellently communication skills, something that I have to continuously work on in order to make business connections and get my voice out into the world. Overall, Jeff Sallet’s presentation inspired me to continue to work hard in my academics in hopes of a successful career like his own.

Jeff Sallet's presentation was incredible. He exhibits such strong leadership qualities and communicates in such an engaging manner. His career trajectory is exemplary and I feel it is very relevant to current students at Isenberg. He stressed on having diverse experiences in college which helped him start as a special agent at the FBI at the age of 26 (while the average age is 32). Another thing that really stuck out for me was his passion for success and how he planned his career. Jeff always wanted to be in the FBI but always considered public accounting as his backup option. He stressed on having a 1-year, 3-year and a 5-year plan at every stage of his life which actually makes you think. Another amazing aspect of his life was his lessons on leadership and how a follower can be more important than a leader and the importance of listening to other members of the team. The FBI Chief not only gave valuable lessons but did it in an interesting and humorous way and I am glad I was able to attend this session person and see his badge and ID.

Jeff Sallet's presentation was incredibly interesting and educational. He was able to connect with us students by being a graduate of UMass and Isenberg, and more specifically with myself because he was also an Accounting major. I was fascinated when he sis that being an accountant provides you with the type of life skills that would be very beneficial in a career such as the FBI. I would have never made that connection otherwise, because on the surface one would not think those two fields compliment each other much at all. It provided me with a different outlook on my career choice and made me realize that I can go in many different directions with my degree, and they may not all be conventional. This doesn't necessarily just mean that I would try and join the FBI, but rather I could look at different options that I may not have believed would work before. This is important for anybody to take into consideration because, as Jeff said, you need a backup plan.

This was my second time listening to Jeff Sallet give a presentation on the role of accounting in his position at the FBI. I thought his presentation was very educational and enjoyed learning again about the roles that accounting functions can play in tracking down criminal activity. I thought hearing about some of the specific cases that he had worked on was particularly interesting to hear. One thing I respected about his story was how he was able to set specific goals and plans for himself like making a career in the FBI and was able to achieve these goals at such a young age of 26 by being persistent towards his goals. Although I have no interest in working for the government in forensic accounting I did think it was an interesting presentation and thought that his points about leadership and setting yourself apart from others in the field to achieve success were relevant to my current situation as an Isenberg Student.

Jeff's presentation was both entertaining, and very interesting and formative. He told us about his roots and how he was able to grow into the position he is in now. He directly related to me and my peers as he attended UMass and was an accounting major in Isenberg. I was particularly interested in listening to him speak because this was a career path I was strongly looking into. He made me feel even more confident this was one of the paths I want to pursue and he gave a good feel as to how to begin the process. Hearing from a man as knowledgable and successful as him is something that does not come across too often, and I am happy I had the opportunity to do so.

I really enjoyed Jeff Sallet’s presentation! I particularly admired how he was able to keep us all engaged for an hour with his speaking style, in which he weaved in jokes and life lessons into the story of his career, from starting out at Ernst and Young to making it as an FBI agent. Through listening to his talk, I was able to get a glimpse into the different places an accounting major can take you to. He emphasized that because accounting is more about problem-solving and reasoning than pure math, he was able to use similar principles and succeed as an FBI agent. He made me realize that I can do so much more than I originally imagined with my major and what I am currently learning. Although I do plan to work for a Big Four firm after I graduate, it is exciting to think about where I could go from there - whether it is taking on the seemingly unlikely job of an FBI agent, or just another career where my problem-solving skills can be put to use. Overall, the presentation was eye-opening while being entertaining at the same time.

This is my second time attending Jeff's talk as Prof. Lowry invited him to our 211 lecture and it was just as inspiring and motivational as the first time. My favorite section of the talk by him is when he said accounting is not about numbers and math but rather about problem solving. I could not agree with him more as this is the reason why I chose to become an Accounting major in the first place. I really enjoy being given a certain limited data and then using logic and problem solving to get to the solution. It also really makes sense that he says that is why accounting majors really make good FBI agents. What is also encouraging is that Jeff admitted that he was not one of the top students when he was here but through networking and using Isenberg's resources, he was able to land in Ernst & Young, which is one of the biggest Accounting firms in the country. It really reminded me that life in school is not about just my GPA and it also includes extracurricular activities and what I do outside of classes.

When I heard about Jeff Sallet coming to speak, it was the first I had heard of him, but I was really interested in hearing him talk. I had heard of forensic accounting before and have always had somewhat of an interest in the field and was eager to hear from him. Right off the bat I knew I was going to like his presentation. You could see he had a lot of charisma and was a good story teller. I liked how he kept talking about weaving in jokes and other stories throughout his general narrative. You could tell he could have talked all day and I would have stayed and listened to him. There seemed to be a few things about leadership that he wanted us to take away while also telling a bit of his journey to where he is today. These things were work hard, be nice to people, and lead from where you stand. The lead from where you're standing point was a good one, I like how he said sometimes being a good leader requires that you be a good follower and take in as much information as you can. I thought that was a good point. Aside from this I've taken his advice as well as the advice several of the people in my life and that is to make good decisions so that all potential job opportunities such as the FBI are still on the table.

Jeff Sallet's presentation was more than just informational. Jeff showed that accounting is more than just crunching numbers and having a boring personality. Agent Sallet's personality immediately had an impact on the room. He was extremely energetic, passionate, and even comical when telling us of his stories from the past, including some from when he attended UMass in the 90s. The week before he was introduced to be speaking I coincidentally had just finished a show on Netflix centered around an FBI agent who had a background in Accounting, but I did not know that having a major in accounting was a feasible option if you wanted to be an FBI agent. Agent Sallet knew what he was doing when he was up on stage. He did a great job of weaving in life lessons he had learned from his past into the story he was telling us as to how he got to where he is today. Sallet stressed the concept of understanding your place. He was honest when saying that you won't always be the "smartest guy in the room", and he stressed that you should take the advice and listen to others whenever you get the chance. Sallet was very easy to seem to have a connection with, he was open about a lot of things, running the Boston Marathon the year of the bombing, and even passing around his FBI badge (which was really cool). From Sallet's presentation I am excited to learn more about Forensic Accounting, and hopefully getting into that field myself.

There was one episode that I will never forget. He took out his CPA license and told us, although his position now is not related to this license, he always takes the license. He said: “Never forget that what brings you here.” Learning accounting helps him build an ability of logical thinking and it can help him deal with things in daily life, even the things in his FBI work place. He was able to speak to us in an interesting way to keep us engaged the whole time and I appreciated that fact about him. He was very convincing because sometimes I think will the CPA and all the requirements it takes to get it, be worth it in the end. Hearing him speak about being a FBI agent makes me more assured for the long term. Accounting is the language of business and I think that it applies in many areas and Jeff shows this. It was great to hear from someone as knowledgeable as him because opportunities like that do not come around often.

Jeff Sallet is a great example for those that are interested or have not heard of the forensic side of accounting. I think he shows that accounting is not just full of pocket protectors and sifting through balance sheets but there is a greater purpose for doing so. Accounting doesn't just have to be about making money for a single company and helping them book their transactions. Accounting can be used for something much greater and can lead to higher standards and better practices. Jeff also went in to detail about how to manage which I found most useful. One of the things he said that will really stick with me is the philosophy that as you move up in the chain of command, people do not become more knowledgeable on the subject matter they are managing but less because they have to focus more time elsewhere. Overall, a great presentation and wished it could have gone longer so he could have fully finished his thoughts and stories.

I really enjoyed Jeff's presentation in Mahar about working in public accounting as well as his work as Special Agent in charge of the Chicago division. He began his career at EY, coming in to do audit work and eventually finding his way to the forensic side of accounting. He did well to show that a degree in accounting is not a career that people generally imagine. He worked in public accounting, but he was not restricted to a desk and doing audit work. He went to the FBI and told stories about how his experience in forensic accounting and the ability to problem solve allowed him to investigate crime and assist in bringing the Boston bomber to justice. One of the most important things that stuck with me was Jeff's leadership style. Because the FBI is militant, Jeff often finds himself ordering people to complete things during a crisis. He also talked about how his leadership style varies in times other than crisis; during peaceful times, he is willing to ask his subordinates for their opinions to ensure operations run smoothly. He also was talking about how he manages a team of over 1,000 people. He needs his subordinates to be leaders and problem solvers on their own. Overall, I loved his presentation because I would like to go into public accounting, get my CPA license, and work for the FBI in the forensics department! I learned so much from him.

Jeff Sallet's Presentation was interesting, informative and motivational. Jeff being a UMass Alumni made it particularly interesting, as he told inside jokes and stories, and also more inspiring, because Jeff, just like me, was an accounting student. His success is phenomenal and was able to reach his goal at 26 instead of the average age of 32. My favorite part of Jeff's Presentation is when he said "accounting students are not good at math, they are good at problem-solving" that really spoke to me because I have never been a strong math student but I enjoy accounting and have always wondered why that is. I also really enjoyed how Jeff worked in forensic accounting because that has always been an interest of mine since joining the major. Furthermore, I find it amazing how accounting is such a diverse degree and how there is a multitude of positions in the field. I think that accounting is sometimes deemed as a boring industry, for those who aren't involved in it, but Jeff's presentation highlighted the intensity of accounting. Jeff Sallet and the FBI's forensic accounting department uses their knowledge of accounting to find and track criminals, something I never thought my major could do. Overall, the presentation was beneficial and I am glad I had the opportunity to go!

I personally found Jeff Sallet’s presentation to be extremely entertaining and informative. His life experiences and lessons learned are both things that each one of us as students can connect to, and also benefit from as we go on to encounter similar endeavors. Specifically, Jeff’s emphasis on how important earning his degree and CPA was to the rest of his career really stood out to me in his talk. I found it very interesting that he went into accounting particularly, knowing it would be a strong basis to achieve his actual life long dream of being an FBI agent. This spoke to me, as it just proves how powerful the accounting side of business can be, and how it can lead you to anywhere you want to go in life. As Jeff described, accounting is the “language of business,” and for him specifically, he found that there is nothing more powerful and intimidating to the criminals he deals with than “an accountant with a badge and a gun.” Furthermore, I found Jeff’s specific stories about situations and cases he has been involved in to be very motivational and encouraging. His mention of how he was very closely associated with both the 9/11 attacks and the Boston Marathon bombings really caught my attention. While these were obviously life changing events for him, Jeff’s perseverance and ability to provide aid through his accounting knowledge and abilities seriously made me admire him and the major even more.

Jeff Sallet talked about many interesting things during his presentation. One of the things that really stuck with me was when he said "the most powerful thing is an accountant with a badge and a gun". Before this presentation, I would never describe the accounting profession to be particularly cool or interesting. But the fact that you could be in the FBI with an accounting degree is a really cool possibility. I also found it very interesting that an accountant was the one to find Al Pacino and arrested him. I also liked that he talked about job experience. He said that when he was in college, he had an internship with a bank, and then went on to work for a big six firm. This was all the experience he needed to join the FBI. Jeff Sallet's presentation was very interesting.

I enjoyed how Jeff came to us to talk about accounting but was not a cpa working for a big 4 firm. Accounting is so much more than many people think it is, and Jeff showed how an accountant can climb his way from simply an accountant, to the head of the FBI

by Nick Colangelo

The speech Mr Sallet gave was amazing and encouraging, specially as an accounting major it helped to sit down and plan long term plan. he spoke from his experience with confidents, and sent out a powerful message for all of us in the school of Management. one of the points that interest me from his speech was how accountants can make a great FBI agent because we learn to think logically and not only adding numbers. He is right, there is a stereo type that goes around, which is accounting is about numbers and you have to be good in math in order to be a good accountant. No! all you need is to think logically and have a great calculator.

Luladay Tekalegn.

"Lead from where you stand", was something that Mr. Sallet repeated a couple times during his speech. This quote stands out to me, as it emphasizes how everyone brings their own personal experiences to the tables, whether they are professional or personal. Everything we experience shapes us in a certain way, and Mr. Sallet made it clear that it is important to listen to every person's thoughts, comments, or opinions, especially as you enter leadership positions.

As Jeff attended UMass as an accounting major, I felt that I could relate to him right away. I think one of the main takeaways from the presentation was that you don’t need to know exactly what you want to do as a career at such a young age. Jeff went from starting at EY to then becoming an FBI Agent. I have always been interested in forensic accounting so it was very insightful to here more about his experiences and how he got into that field and where he went with it. Jeff explained that accounting isn’t just about crunching numbers, but it is more about problem solving and that’s when I realized I am in the correct major. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Jeff’s presentation and I hope to see him speak in person.

-Samantha Pender

I loved listening to Jeff Sallet's passion for his work and his school. As a transfer student, I always find myself in awe at just how incredible UMass and Isenberg is. I know that not everyone gets the opportunities that UMass students do. Jeff made a point to really emphasize how well UMass prepared him for work, and how fortunate we are to be going here. Furthermore, I liked Sallet's focus on "treating people with dignity and respect". Whether it is a coworker, groupmate, or friend it is so important to be respectful of others time, knowledge, and experiences. Not being “the smartest person in the room” can benefit you the most, because you have the most to gain. Overall I truly admire Sallet’s success and believe that his drive shone during his presentation.
Sophia Cofone

I attended Jeff Sallet's speech and I really enjoyed it. I thought Special Agent Sallet was a very good speaker and it seemed like he was really well prepared. It was really cool to see the progression of his career, from EY to Arthur Anderson to the FBI. I think the most memorable part from his speech was when he was discussing how a person should act. He said you can never get complacent. Complacency will not allow you to grow and continue to push forward. Jeff Sallet said he was never complacent with where he was and that is why he is where he is today. I believe is someone continues to want more they will continue to succeed. Although I really enjoyed the speech, I wish he went more in detail about some FBI stories. Speeches from accountants or successful people can tend to be very similar, but Jeff Sallet has life experience that could have been really cool to hear about. All and all I thought the speech was very useful and impressive. I do not regret attending the speech.

- Daniel Sharaf

It was inspiring to hear about a CPA who has had the opportunity to make his way through the ranks of the FBI. Sometimes it seems like working at a public accounting firm is one of the only career paths for a CPA, but Jeff Sallet proved to us that you can literally work in any field that you want. There will always be a necessity for accountants. I also liked how he showed us his CPA license card that he keeps with his FBI badge. I thought it was cool that he held his accounting licensure with just as much importance as his FBI credentials. When I chose to major in accounting I always thought that I would have a regular office job in a big company but his speech gave me a different aspect to it. It was nice that he could relate to us too since he also graduated from UMass. Growing up I always wanted to work for a big company like the FBI or Google so it made me realize that it is possible to do that with an accounting degree. It was really intriguing when he talked about having real life experiences and how important they are. Having an internship this summer with PwC, makes me feel luckily that I will be able to have that experience so early in college that way other companies can see that I have been working hard to gain experiences.

I really enjoyed watching Jeff Sallet's speech. He had a lot of useful information and advice for how to get the most out of college and be a competitive candidate for job placement. Something that I really got from his speech was the importance of real life experience, and making sure you aren't just "showing up for school", but are actually investing time into clubs and different extracurriculars. He put such a strong emphasis on obtaining real life experience so that you can become familiar with different types of people and problems in the workplace. I am really excited to graduate with a degree in Accounting because it has so many different opportunities. The fact that Jeff Sallet worked at EY, and now runs the Chicago FBI branch and overlooks over a thousand employees, gives me a lot of hope for working in a public accounting firm after I graduate. He really showed how versatile a major in accounting could be, and that you can really be happy in a job within this field.

He was very relatable, and seemed to really care about helping students to prepare for their futures. I have not heard many accountant speakers talk about opportunities other than CPA accounting and I found his experience and outlook to be very refreshing. I especially enjoyed when he talked about working hard and keeping yourself grounded by remembering where you came from. Jeff not only had great advice about internships and co-op opportunities and getting involved on campus, but he was also full of life lessons that I felt really applies to college students our age. He told us to work on our interpersonal skills, because it is becoming a more and more important skill that people our age are missing out on. I'm very thankful the Jeff took the time to come out and talk to us about his different experiences and his journey to becoming an FBI agent.

It was a pleasure to be in attendance for Jeff's talk. Jeff outlined several key factors that have enabled him to achieve career success. One which stood out to me the most is experience. Jeff's co-op experience separated him from all of the other candidates when applying to the public accounting firms. Real world experience trumps class performance and grade point average. Another important aspect of his success was never taking the easy way. Jeff challenged himself by taking on difficult and demanding leadership roles throughout his FBI career. By enriching his responsibilities, Jeff became a valued leader and is a highly marketable employee to any business organization. Furthermore, he touched upon a successful workplace attitude. Being a team player and leveraging the perspectives and intelligence of others is critical to an individual's success in a public firm. Thinking you are the smartest person in the room is a devastating and audacious mindset. Jeff had great public speaking and presentation skills, and it was interesting to feel his stage presence in person. After seeing his presentation, I feel very confident that a career in accounting is a gold standard.

Initially when I began watching Jeff Sallet's, I expected to be bored by talk of CPA's and the usual story of working for a successful a firm. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my expectations were completely wrong. Jeff Sallet's story proved to be both entertaining and inspiring. It reshaped my understanding of what a career in accounting means. While I do not think I will be majoring in accounting, I still learned a lot about the variety of choices an accounting major has careerwise, as well as some of the necessary requirements to succeed. It really shocked me how far an accountant can make it in the FBI, and honestly inspires me.

Jeffrey Sallet told his story about transferring to UMass, working at EY, Arthur Andersonand getting into FBI.I learn two important things from his speech. First, he said that you need to really enjoy your work. I heard a lot of people told about this when I did on-site visiting to different investment banking or asset management company. Financial industry is a place that with fast pace and requires hard work. So if I really want to launch a career in this industry, I need to find an area that I have passion toward it.Second, He told that real life experience actually matters. He got all interviews when applying for jobs because he worked at IBM for one semester. Before he joined in FBI, he has working experience and he got an CPA. Everyone in FBI has diverse background. So he said that all the experience you collected, are things that valuated it. That inspired me to keep looking for internship and try to find more opportunities during college. ---Henan Peng

Listening to Jeff was very interesting because he has such an outgoing and vibrant personality. My favorite quote from his entire speech which really resonated with me was, even though you may be in a higher leadership position, don't assume that you are the smartest in the room. I really like that quote because it is always good to remember that when you are on a team, everyone plays a different role and can provide different insights on solving a solution. Furthermore, it was very interesting on how organized and dedicated he was to becoming an FBI agent. He planned out most of his steps and stuck to them and was able to become admitted at such a young age.

Jeff Sallet’s presentation was particularly interesting. His eloquence and humor held my attention for the entire hour that he spoke. As an accounting student, I enjoyed listening to his stories that pertained to my current educational path. From being a student at UMass Amherst to studying accounting, I was intrigued by all of his experiences and fond memories. Upon attending his presentation, I have realized that I am interested in the forensic accounting industry. Sallet’s time in forensic accounting was something that I would like to do as I enter the workforce in only a few years. While it is uncommon for an entry-level accountant to practice forensic accounting, I am extremely appreciative of this door that has been opened by attending Sallet’s presentation. Once Sallet finished, I had the opportunity to speak with him. During our conversation, I was able to ask him about the pressing matters surrounding the FBI and its former director, James Comey. I am currently pursing a minor in political science, so listening to Sallet’s answer was extremely eye-opening. This presentation was especially memorable and ranks among one of the best that I have attended.

Jeff Sallet's speech was very encourage and interesting. Unlike many other speaker just talking about CPA exams and test, Jeff told his story from transferring to UMA, got a chancing working at EY then finally got a job in FBI. His experience was fantastic and helpful. I really enjoying listening to his experience that studied in UMA. I did think about change my major before, but now after listening to Jeff's speech, I realized that accounting could be fun and interesting. His experience working at forensic accounting industry is helpful, because I wish I could get a chance to work in other countries.

I thought Jeff Sallet's speech was really interesting, especially to hear from an Isenberg alumni. I think that it showed that being in the accounting field can lead someone down many different paths. It is really cool that he worked at Ernst and Young and eventually ended up working in the accounting field in the FBI. I particularly liked this speech because we are not exposed to many different jobs that relate to accounting other than basic public accounting, so it was nice to see another perspective on the field. Sallet displayed great knowledge and leadership skills that were really inspiring and a motivational factor to stay in the accounting major and field.
