From there, Launcelot establishes dominion over France and sets up with his army in the fortified city of Benwick. He allows Arthur to pillage the lands for a while but is urged by fellow nobles to meet Arthur out for battle. Sir Launcelot however does not wish to go to war with his liege and chooses to sue for peace. When King Arthur recieves the message, he wishes to accept it, but Sir Gawain who is bent for revenge pushes his hand. Sir Gawain, still furious with rage, rode before the castle walls and called for a challenge against the kinghts. For six months, he fought off other knights until Sir Launcelot had no choice but do go up against one he still considered a friend or face shame to his honor. Launcelot rode from the city with a strong army, causing Arthur to realize how lenient Launcelot had been towards his actions. Then, the duel between Sir Gawain and Sir Launcelot commenced revealing that even after three hours while Launcelot grew weaker, Sir Gawain only grew stronger. He knocks him to the ground and steps away even while Sir Gawain threatens to never stop challenging him. Once again, Launcelot pleads with Arthur to end the war, and Arthur does not give in but lessens the attacks to mild skirmishes. Three weeks later after recovering, Sir Gawain challenges Sir Launcelot again. It ends with him on the ground yelling at Launcelot to strike him for he will never yield.
