In my World Religions class I wanted students to take what they had learned about Buddhism and move it to the real world - but I needed to show them how others did that. I chose two female American Buddhists

1. Listened to a podcast called Radical Dharma by Rev. angel Kyodo williams - a black queer female Zen priest (a very unusual combination)
2. Read an article called Entering the Bardo by Joanna Macy

My goal was ALSO to have them take the material and talk about it ... formulate their own opinions and share in a discussion. To prepare - they had to read and 1. summarize her talk/vision/work in 6-8 sentences. 2. give their opinion/response in 2-4 sentences. 3. prepare two discussion questions that evaluate, apply, or create - see slide 15 … these should reflect something about you and your life relating to the material

Discussions went really well in most groups (ha - I caught one kid sleeping in one group). They were pleased with themselves b/c conversations were meaningful and interesting.
