Burning fossil fuls: Burning fuels has the greatest impact on the atmosphere than any other single human activity. Power generation is responsible for about 23 billion tons of CO2 emissions per year- in excess of 700 tonnes every second. Coal is especially damaging to our atmosphere, releasing 70% of more carbon dioxide than natural gas for every unit of energy produced.

Deforestation: Humans clear vast areas of vegetation around the world for farming to sell tree products and for infrastructure development. Up to one-fifth of global greenhouse gas pollution comes from deforestation.

Farming: Animals, particularly sheep and cattle, produce methane, a greenhouse gas. Some fertilizer also release nitrous gas, which is another greenhouse gas.

Ways to reduce the impact of global warming

3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle): Choose reusable products instead of disposables, buy products with minimal packaging, and recycle whatever you can, such as papers, plastics, alminum cans. By recycling a half of a household waste, it's possible to save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Also, if you reduce your household waste by 10%, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

Use less plastic products: As estimated 12 million barrels of oil are used to manufacture the 30 million plastic bags that Americans use each year. This is equivalent to the amount of oil in our Strategic Oil Reserve. The Earth Resource Foundation is campaigning for stores to stop using plastic bags at chekout counters and sell reusable bags instead, so that people will either bring their own bags or recycle plastic bags more often. When used for bags, it's a wasteful and unnecessary way to deplete our oil supply and contribute to CO2 buil-up in our atmosphere.

Use less heat and air conditioning: For example, setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer could save 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

Plant a tree: A single tree will absorb approximately 1 ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

It's because the build up of plastic in our ocean is a greater cause of eco-system disruption. An estimated 100,000 marine animals die each year from suffocating on or ingesting plastic bags.
In addition, plastic is toxic and may be affecting our food supply or the food chain. Increased levels of manmade pollutants are showing up in remote areas like the arctic, affecting polar bears and other arctic mammals and further adding to the stress of adapting to new climates realities and habitat changes.
Additionally, dioxin and toxins can leach out of landfills, further contaminating waterways and oceans.
