Even they don't realize it, they were destroying the murder weapon they were looking for.Mrs.Maloney gets away with the crime by having the Officers eat the lamb leg. Saying that its the least she could do after all their troubles. As it all happens Mrs.Maloney gives a little laugh because now she knows she has definitely gotten away with the murder of her husband.
