The teacher will use a preassessment before she reads the first story aloud by asking the students to offer up what they already know about characters, settings and key details. The teacher will use a formative assessment during the activity as the children are working on their illustrations and captions. She will be able to quickly identify students who are not understanding by looking over their shoulders and asking questions about their work. And finally, the teacher will do a summative assessment once all the journals are complete. The teacher will review each one and make notes on how well each student was able to recall characters, scenes and key details from the story by looking at the drawing and reading the caption provided by the student.

During the lecture the teacher will highlight and define new words such as "character" and "scene" or "setting" to ensure that the ELL's are understanding the new words. The teacher will also use visuals when defining these words. When reading the story aloud to the whole class, the teacher will stop on new vocabulary words and check for understanding with all students. The teacher will also work with ELL's as they illustrate a character or scene and will offer the option of dictating the caption instead of writing it. If they choose to dictate, the teacher will write their caption in highlighter in their journal so that they can trace over the words.
