What is sustainability?

Most of my part in the first group work was solving some conceptual and definitional problems, so I relied on ChatGPT and the Oxford English Dictionary to complete most of the assignments. For example, the definition of sustainability and what each of its three pillars are, etc.

The first discussion with my friend was very efficient and it only took us about twenty minutes to complete the division of labour and to resolve some of the content doubts.

So, what is sustainability? This is the answer given by ChatGPT↓
Sustainability refers to the idea of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

However, the meaning of sustainability can vary depending on the context in which it is being used. It can refer to environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, social sustainability, or a combination of these. Therefore, sustainability can have multiple meanings and connotations.

About Clothes Recycling Bins.

In my personal research, my original plan was to observe and try to use a clothing recycling bin, which would allow people to donate their unwanted clothing to people in needy areas. However, there were many obstacles to this plan.

1. I found two bins near my house, but unfortunately one of them was in a rubbish dump and was full of rubbish, making it almost impossible to use, and the other was blocked by debris, as in the picture, making it inaccessible.
2. When I attempted to contact the staff at the number above, there was no answer.
3. There was no indication on the bins of when the staff would take the clothes or what would happen to them.

So not only did I find out how we would address sustainability issues, but also some of the problems that arise in the process.

1. Very few people use the bins
2. No permanent management staff
3. not much publicity

A film that made me reflect.

In the course of my research and investigation into sustainable development, I was reminded of a film I once saw - Minamata.

This story is based on real events and I was even more impressed by the insertion of real historical photographs and the pain of the patients. The fact that the people in charge of the industry ignored the suffering of the people and instead forced unacceptable wastewater into the sea, which eventually led to widespread illness, is certainly a mockery of a company that claims to be environmentally friendly. But fortunately, the company was eventually taken to court to compensate the people for their massive medical bills.

This reminds me of the similarities between cinema and journalism, in that as well as promoting more sustainable ways of doing things, it is also important to show viewers the dire consequences of destroying the environment, not just in terms of the plants or animals lost, but ultimately in terms of our health as well.

For our first group work and group presentation, we used three people to collect information and one person to do a PowerPoint and make a presentation to complete the assignment.

We had a lot of fun with the group work and everyone did their best to do what they were supposed to do.

After completing the presentation we discussed our group work and we found that the PowerPoint we used for the presentation had too much text in it and was not concise enough. And because all the material was presented by one person, the presenter would get tired.

So what we needed for our final presentation was a more concise PowerPoint and a better prepared speech, as well as each person needing to carefully complete the research they were responsible for.

Our plan is that in our final group presentation we will use fewer words in the PowerPoint and each person will be responsible for presenting their own part of the research, which is also more fair.

The first individual assignment was to carry out research and write some notes, which were recorded using padlets. A video interview was conducted and photos were used as a record.

The individual assignment was difficult and I ended up not being able to make a video but only a photographic record. I was too nervous to express myself logically during the discussion with steve, so I kept reading my padlet notes.

I didn't research enough information, I think the main problem was that I didn't have enough time to research about it because of the end of the day. I was always so nervous when I was doing my presentation that I spoke too fast and my head went blank.

steve gave me some advice and I did a good job with my padlet which helped, but I couldn't just read aloud, I needed to make some communication with the audience. Similarly, I need more information to refine my individual assignments and essays.

My plan might be something like this, more communication so that I can relax more, more research so that I can make my thesis more informative and of course, more serious study.

Firstly, it's important to put all the content of the survey into the video and secondly, I need to express my own ideas directly. Finally, I should try to use English to speak.

For the final group presentation, our group changed the design twice.

The first time, we wanted to study the direction of interior design to solve indoor air pollution, and we made a nice PPT that was complete. But in the end we felt that that design was not creative enough, so we wanted to change it.

The second time, we still chose the air pollution issue, but not only indoor air pollution. A global pollution problem is troubling us, and we used it as an inspiration to design an outfit. I think our design was good, but the problem was in the presentation.

The time we spent revising the PowerPoint was so long that we didn't have time to practice the presentation, which led to us not being able to finish it on time for the simulation. there were some logical errors in the content of the PowerPoint.

So this weekend we changed our PPT and practised it again to get better results.

Included in our final exam was an 800-word paper, and it took me a long time to finish it, and it was my second time learning how to use citation format.

My paper didn't need much revision after I finished the draft, and I tried to make sure that nothing was out of place in my first writing. Honestly, it made me happy because writing papers and finding information is not that easy. The point is, you need to find some information that you can use, and that evidence needs to go with your essay.

Another difficulty is the citation format. I spent too much time on this matter and needed to check not only the various names, but also the URLs, and the fonts. The good news is that I'm pretty good at it now.

Another thing is that I have helped a lot of my students to correct their formatting, which is very rewarding.

It's hard to believe it's been five weeks, in which I've done a lot of things and certainly made a few mistakes, but in the end it's ended pretty well for me.

First of all, during these five weeks, I learnt how to cite some literature, how to reflect on myself, how to write a scholarly report, and at the same time, I learnt a lot about the art related to sustainability. It makes me feel good that learning something new is always mentally pleasing. But the final exam was a bit difficult, the main problem was in my listening and speaking.

I think those problems were always there and my listening and speaking were not that good. When the speaker spoke faster, I had trouble reacting to what he meant by what he said, or when he swallowed too many syllables, I couldn't tell what the word was. Speaking problems are more typical; I sometimes get nervous and suddenly forget what the word I'm trying to say is, or I get similar words mixed up.

Steve gave me a lot of advice and I found that very helpful. The first thing I need to do is practise more tongue twisters in English, which will make me speak more smoothly. In terms of writing I should include more conclusions and not just repeat existing solutions.

So in the next part of my studies I hope I do better. I will do more exercises to improve my skills.
