"I would like to believe this is a story I’m telling. I need to believe it. I must believe it. Those who can believe that such stories are only stories have a better chance. If it’s a story I’m telling, then I have control over the ending. Then there will be an ending, to the story, and real life will come after it. I can pick up where I left off."

Atwood sets about constructing 'story' as an important motif in Offred's narrative. This motif serves as a vehicle for the character to exert some control over her destiny, to step outside of her experiences in Gilead and see them as 'a story' as a means of protecting herself from the realities of the horrors that she's living through. If she can compartmentalise her experiences this way and get through them then she feels she will have "a better chance", a chance to "pick up where (she) left off." This demonstrates the survival instincts of Offred as a character and her tendency to use her rationality as her primary tool for navigating her situation.

"My nakedness is strange to me already. My body seems outdated... I avoid looking down at my body, not so much because it's shameful or immodest but because I don't want to see it. I don't want to look at something that determines me so completely." p.
