In Fahrenheit 451, a futuristic society burns books and destroys all available knowledge in order to keep the public dependent on the government and media. Scott Pilgrim vs the World presents an awkward man who struggles with self confidence yet prevails to learn self respect. In the comparison of Oedipus the King and the film Minority Report motifs of suicide and free will. For example, in Minority Report, John did not kill the man he was supposed to kill, and later in the film John is predicted to be a victim of murder. However, rather than killing John, Burgess killed himself because he would rather die than live in a world where his invention, PreCrime, was destroyed. Like Oedipus, Lamar has awoken from his blindness, asks for forgiveness, and then inflicts a punishment upon himself. After both Lamar and John were able to alter their fate, I believe that it is possible that free will exists. If we believe we have a choice and are careful about our actions, we can control some to several details of our lives, or the more endearing term for it, our fate. Throughout every unit, the central character has some qualities of a tragic hero and undergoes an event that leads to a major lifestyle change. Montag was almost robotic, like his wife Mildred, until he meets a woman who dies to protect books. Scott Pilgrim is selfish and immature, proved by his relationship with a high-schooler, but gains courage along with other powers on his journey to win Ramona's love. Gilgamesh was a womanizer and an invincible fighter whom everyone hated, until he finds a man of equal strength he can battle with. Oedipus is content with being king until his people demand him to find the murder of the previous king, which is actually Oedipus himself. John ignores all the sadness in his life, by working nonstop, until Agatha shows a vision where he murders someone. All of these characters were pulled out of their continuous cycle of life, to attain a goal and discover themselves on a heroic journey as the authors incorporated themes, motifs, and literary devices to convey symbolic views of the future.
