However, things got even worse when the ship bringing them to Canada sinks in the Pacific ocean and Pi is the only human survivor of the incident. Alone on a lifeboat, in the middle of the ocean, with a Bengal tiger, Pi must either adapt or die.

In the ocean, Pi has virtually nothing to help him survive until he reaches land or is rescued by a passing ship. Pi has to use what little resources he as on the lifeboat to sustain himself and Richard Parker on this little boat until that happens. He uses a whistle to tame RIchard Parker while pretending that it was all a circus act so he wouldn't be as afraid of Richard Parker as he could have been. His quick thinking and ability to use what little he has at his disposal allowed him to survive out in the ocean for the amount of time he did with a man eating tiger as his "pet".

Dynamic, no question. Pi constantly is needing to change his ways. even at the beginning, Pi believed when he went to the christian church that everything would be terrible. Then, before the family skips town, he's down with three religions. And that vegetarian nature doesn't last long on the ocean, that's for sure. So yeah, he goes through plenty of change.
