My novel, Kafka on the Shore, subverts the stereotype we sometimes encounter that the poor are lazy and enjoy living off welfare. This is accomplished through the character of Nakata. He lives off of government wellfare, and is very self-conscious about his indivisible disability, which prevents him from working. He is arguably the hardest working character in the novel, as he works as a self-described "missing cat detective" and bravely embarks on a quest when given the call to adventure.

Interestingly, the two main characters in my book, Kafka on the Shore, never meet. One represents poverty and the other represents the upper class. I believe this reinforces the class value that the upper class do not need to interact with those who have less. This also impacts why I believe that the upper class would benefit most if this class were to be successful-- overall the book seems to side more with the upper class.

Red blooded people are weak, poor, and cannot produce magic. While the silver blooded people are powerful, rich, and have magical powers that depends on where they are from. In the first book there is a woman known as Mare Borrow, a red blooded woman, has magic. Baffling a queen and king they dress her up as a silver and say she is a princess from a long lost family who will be marrying one of their sons so it will not cause panic. In an attempt to get away and bring fairness and respect to red blooded people, Mare sets off on a long journey to not only set fairness but to also make sure a war would not break out between the two groups.
