Afterwards I spent two years at the University of Arkansas working towards a Masters in Sociology where I was able to option 35 hours in Sociology.

My legal research has uncovered several areas of interest. The most pertinent would be in the field of Special Education and student access to service animals during school hours. This subject interest me not only as a special education teacher and, hopefully, a future administrator but as the grandparent of a special needs granddaughter whose parents are in the process of gaining permission for their daughter to bring her service dog to school.
The following website includes several references to education law http://www.wrightslaw.com/law.articles.htm.

I mentioned earlier I picked the topic of service animals in education as my legal/ethical issue because of the demographics this subject impacts. As a special education teacher I see the impact that therapy dogs have on my students and how a service animal can be beneficial to those who not only have physical limitations but also those students who have a medical needs. I have a 9 year old daughter, Mia, who has seizures and her therapy dog is able to alert on an oncoming seizure allowing parents, school staff and even Mia know which allows for the seizure to occur in a safe environment.

http://www.wrightslaw.com/law/art/fry.napoleon.504.service.dog.htm

Five Things I Learned

Through my interview with Ms. Gilleland I learned five things concerning important issues as it pertains to education law and ethics.
1. Everything is not black or white. Gilleland reported an incident with a kindergarten student who touched another student in her private area. After weighing all the options and dealing with the adult emotions, and consulting legal, it was determined that the student would serve a "reverse suspension" one in which the parents would set with the student in class for the day, mandatory school counselor session with the family and student, and a "restorative circle" with both students and their families facilitated by administrators and the counselor. The situation would have been dealt with differently with an older student. While there is obviously more to the whole story that time and space doesn't allow one must realize when dealing with legal issues not everything is black and white and some situations need to be dealt with on an individual bases.
2. District provide opportunities for continued professional development.
Districts, whether private, public or charter provide professional development opportunities for staff to receiving training in legal and ethical issues. Some of the issues that Gilleland has received training in are Special Education, Employment Law, Immigration Law, FERPA,
HIPPA, CPS and family law concerning custody arrangements. 3. Issues monitored for compliance
As an administrator it is important to regularly monitor issues concerning attendance, suspension records disaggregated by SES, gender, and race. Legal issues concerning ESSA and campus improvement paperwork, Title 1 and any related spending. Lastly laws and any changes to Title IX.
4. A legal issues/court case with ongoing implications.
Gilleland expressed concern with the rights of transgender students to use the restroom of the gender one identifies with as an ongoing legal situation with broad implications. Various districts have tried to be proactive and address these issues but there is still ongoing legal issues and the outcome is still uncertain.
5. Student/Staff rights as it pertains to education.
Student discipline is always an area in which staff should know and understand their rights, limitations, and how the law views these issues. Careful documentation of all situations must be in compliance with district guidelines and state laws. Teachers often get overwhelmed with student behavior and might communicate unprofessionally. Another area of concern for staff is conducting ones self in an unprofessional manner outside of work hours. A negative social media presents, work gossip, and knowledge and/or participation of illegal activity can result in a staff member being terminated.

(C. Gilleland, personal communication, June 5, 2018)
