Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

This classic is about Sam I Am, a very persistent fellow who is trying to convince the main character, who was never named, that green eggs and ham are delicious. Sam I am cannot convince him that these would taste good under any circumstance. Sam I Am becomes so annoying that the main character finally agrees to try the green eggs and ham if he will leave him alone. Once he tries the food, he realizes how good they are! This book could be used with younger kids. Not only is it a fun read, but it could help kids understand that trying new foods is a good thing!

This Life-the-Flap book is very meaningful to me as it was one of the first books my daughter and I read together. She is now 4 years old and still enjoys this book, even though she has advance to other books. These interactive books are very enjoyable to younger children and can really help lay the foundation for future reading. This type of book, in my opinion, is one of the more important books a child can read. It shows them reading is fun!

This book has withstood the test of time! This was one of my favorites growing up and is still a favorite of kids today. This book is a very fun read and can help kids learn the alphabet. The letters of the alphabet all climb up to the top of the coconut tree, eventually causing it to bend over. All the letters fall out and sustain various injuries. Thankfully, the uppercase letters, their parents, come to the rescue! The letters are right back up to no good as the book ends with them wanting to climb back up the tree. This book could definitely be included in a pre school/kindergarten class when helping kids learn the alphabet.

This book was a favorite of ours while my wife was pregnant with our second child. Emma, our oldest was 2 years old during this time so she could understand what was going on. She was so excited to be a big sister and this book just built on that! It goes through different parts of a day in the life of a big sister. This book is obviously meant for young children and may not fit into a classroom past preschool or kindergarten.

The premise of this book is that during all parts of the day, a parents' love never changes for their child. How awesome is that?!

This book would be great for a late elementary-junior high aged classroom.

What would it be like living in a "perfect" society? Sounds great doesn't it? "The Giver" gives the reader a glimpse into this. However, a Utopian society is quickly revealed to be more of a Dystopian society. Will Jonas, the main character, be able to escape this so called utopia?? Let yourself "escape" to an alternate reality in this exciting fantasy novel. This book would be great in a middle school classroom. Could also be a good book to read aloud.

A wonderful poetry novel about a young boy named Jack who is struggling with the typical insecurities of growing up. His self confidence is increased through an unexpected source-poetry! With help from his teacher and the emergence of a newly found idol in a famous poet, An insecure, shy young boy grows to a confident, outgoing boy by books end. The tragic loss of his beloved dog, Sky, is a reoccurring pillar in this transition. I think this book could be used in a late elementary or middle school setting. What a great way to incorporate poetry into a classroom.

Mem Fox does a wonderful job emphasizing the benefits of reading to children. Reading aloud to youngsters can not only help instill a passion for reading, but it can truly begin to teach them how to read. She argues that even reading to an infant is beneficial. This really was an interesting read, especially as a father of two.

A truly inspiration story of a beloved high school football coach who was tragically murdered while leading a workout with his players in the high school weight room. The impact this wonderful man had on his school and community while he was living was tremendous, but the impact that his story, the life he lead, and the positive attitude that the family maintained during this awful tragedy is truly remarkable. This book would be a wonderful addition to any junior high or high school classroom. My only concern would be that Ed Thomas was a very faithful person and this is a huge pillar of his story. One would have to be a little careful with that in a public school, but I still think it would be such a great addition!

As any young person dealing with tragedy may endure, this lead to some tough times for Louie Banks. Some of the choices he made were not the best but in the end, it was sports that helped pull him out of this slump. This book would fit best in junior high or early high school. There are a lot of themes that young kids can relate to and to see a young man overcome adversity would be a great teaching opportunity.
