Feedback on our rough cut

In our rough cut, we were commended for our success in syncing up audio and video, and also placing a range of shots in the video constantly so the visuals were always being changed up, and it was interesting to watch the whole way through, instead of just having mid shot after shot. On the other hand, we were told that we were introducing too many locations too early on in the video, and it was disorienting for the audience. We were told by our fellow media students and our teachers to include more close-ups as this is one of the most prominent conventions of music videos. So, we should start off with several shots of one location and move to another one when the tempo of the song changes, e.g. moving into the pre-chorus. We acted on this by choosing our favourite location (King's Cross tunnel) and only using shots of Vienna in that location from when the vocals start until the chorus. Therefore, the video is easier for the audience to process. We went to King's Cross (not the tunnel though!) and reshot some of the footage to include more close ups and more camera movement.

There weren't really any similarities between the feedback on the pitch and the rough cute. In fact, it was quite different.Oe of the main differences was that in our pitch, we were commended on our organisation and choice of locations, whereas after the first rough cut was premiered we were told to alter our use of locations. We were also told our concept was interesting, but in the actual edit we realised how difficult it would be to actually incorporate a clear and effective storyline with the footage we had. So, we decided to scrap that 'concept' altogether and this wasn't actually commented on when our teacher watched our rough cut.

Feedback from the cinema

When we screened our music video in the cinema after the project was finished, we gained all positive feedback from our audience. I've attached 3 videos as examples of what our audience liked about our video. One person said it was 'entertaining' and another said I was 'natural on screen', which was telling about what our audience wanted to see. Naturally, we tried to incorporate a good performance into our video but we didn't consider it one of the things that our audience would find important. However, according to this feedback we have learned at quite a late stage that young women watching mainstream pop videos might value performance just as much as aesthetic.

This student liked our use of costume. We felt that costume was a very significant component of our artist's brand image so we spent a long time thinking about it, and writing about it! This piece of audience feedback shows that we were right - our audience does value costume in music videos and in the image of an artist.

This fellow media student commended us on our editing techniques. Taking the rough cut critiques on board and changing the way we edited the video obviously helped us achieve audience satisfaction. She also complimented our use of the cross-dissolve feature in the video. In the pre-production/planning stages of our video, we did not prioritise effects as we did not think that that was what our audience would be looking forward to potentially seeing in a video they would choose to watch. This feedback proved us wrong - young women who like artists such as Dua Lipa for their music and brand image might expect such editing techniques.

Feedback on my magazine advert

My magazine advert was commented on first by my teacher. She showed me examples of real magazine adverts from the music industry and told me that the album cover should be more of a focus, as my image of the album cover was quite small on the scale of the whole image. My other teacher told me that the reviews should not be obstructing my face and the image of me outside of the album cover, because in an album advert, especially for a mainstream pop artist where appearance is so important, we need to actually see the artist clearly and focus on their face. Focusing on their face makes the artist identifiable and more distinctive than if people simply associate music with a name. I changed both of these things straight away, as is visible from my final draft. Another more minor change I made was enlarging the 'Loved Up Bruise' (album name) text on the right hand side of the advert, just under the Vienna logo, whilst still keeping the artist's name bigger.

Feedback on my website

My website was mostly met with positive feedback. The main point was the background. Initially, all of the pages apart from 'Bio' had a block colour background (the colour of my magazine advert and album cover). My teacher suggested that the first thing we should see when entering an artist's website is their face, much like what was said about my advertisement. Therefore, I made a collage of images of Vienna from the photoshoot we did for the album cover and used it for the homepage. I ensured that the largest photo in the collage was at the top so it made up the top of the website's homepage. I then chose different photos of myself I'd selected for the 'Gallery' page and placed them as tiles on the other pages of the site. I think this feedback was very important because it made the site a lot more visually interesting after I changed it.

When I asked my peers (our target audience) what they liked about my website a commonality was people saying that they liked the fact I used so many Wix apps, like the Twitter feed and the Live feature. This makes the website and the artist as a whole more accessible and fun. A young audience might value this in particular because it means an artist is current and able to prove themselves as relevant across many platforms and in many situations.

Attached is an earlier version of what my website looked like without images of the artist as a background.

This was some of the audience feedback I received for my print advert. Admittedly, this feedback was recorded after I made the above adjustments. This feedback shows that I achieved the look an advert might need in order for my target audience of young women to find it 'aesthetically pleasing' or attractive to look at - specifically with the colour scheme. This student said she also liked the fact that there were two photos of the artist, confirming that audiences do look for the artist's face on an album advert more than anything. The critique she gave me was on the way the website URL was presented, which was more of an accessibility note. I did change this to the clearer font that I used for the majority of the advert.
