Background of Jurong

Jurong was a mangrove swamp area with some plantation farms, fish and prawn ponds and crocodile-infested rivers. Dr Goh Keng Swee, who have been known to be the' Father of Jurong', took the opportunity to turn Jurong into a modern industrial estate. This was a solution to the country's economic problems and Jurong was picked as a prime area for development.

In the 1950s, it was developed into an industrial estate, supported by low costing housing. By 1968, 14.78 square kilometres of industrial land has been prepared, 153 factories were fully functioning and 46 more were being constructed. And by By 1976, 650 factories were in operation and more than 20,000 flats occupied.

Most of them have stayed there for a few years, for about 3-6 years. Besides that there are new residents who just lived in the neighbourhood.

As most of them have stayed there for awhile, they get comfortable with the people around them and the places around them. There is alot of food court around and there is a shopping mall near them. They claim to have very helpful and caring neighbours too.Furthermore, it is a peaceful and convenient neighbourhood.

What they hope to see in the future?

Even though they are very happy with their neighbourhood, they do hope to see improvements in the nighbourhood. Some of the improvements they hope to see is to have more shopping malls, better transport and more facilities. Otherwise, they are happy with their neighbourhood.

Most of the residence are in their middle age. The residence have stayed in the neighbourhood for awhile and they like their neighbourhood. They also wants to see improvements in their neighbourhood to make their neighbourhood a more convenient place to live in. The places where the residents like to go see the malls and the public parks. The teenagers and adults are more likely to go to the malls. The elderly are more likely to go to the public park as it is more peaceful and relaxing
