Essentially, this is the a simple story of a Caucasian man who fell in love with a woman who is part African American and part Native American and their fight to be married at a time when interracial marriage was deemed illegal. She spends each chapter explaining one way in which groups, individuals, and political parties either work to disenfranchise voters or fight against those attempts. There is some historical context and a lot of commentary on present day efforts. Very political/government focused and probably best for teens who are close to voting age because this book definitely calls the reader to action!

Sharon shares how she had to navigate this world. On the one hand, she led a life of privilege, while on the other hand, she was one of the few black children in her wealthy neighborhood.
