Wars and conflicts has always been a dark part of our history. Multiple innocent civilians are affected by these wars and yet it always seems like these conflicts always repeat itself throughout history. Cities wiped, multiple economies destroyed ,it seems like wars and conflicts only have negative effects on everyone participating but why does it still happen? Why do countries continue to hunt for conflicts and start wars? In this photo essay, I will answer the question if all these conflicts and wars are a necessary evil in our history. Are all conflicts avoidable and not necessary? Or is it necessary and unavoidable?

Artifact One - Is Conflict In Society Unavoidable?

In my opinion, conflict in society is unavoidable. In mankind's history one of the major recurring events are wars. May it be small or a big event like the 2 world wars all it takes is one single event or disagreement for a major war to break out like how the unfair treatment of Germany in the Treaty Of Versailles in which they had to conform to taking the blame for the war and multiple economic sanctions , caused the Germans future fuhrer Hitler, to start a campaign that would end up starting World War 2 and cause the mass genocide of millions of jews. This is just one of the many different examples of someone who has a disagreement with their countries situation or position that led to a major conflict or war in history. These types of disagreements are inevitable since people have different opinions and bound to different political ideologies, it's bound to happen that in time a conflict will break out from a potential misunderstanding with a country who shares a different type of political system than your own or a country who has a different opinion on a topic than your own. All it takes is one little match to ignite a massive conflict just like Hitler in World War 2.

Artifact Two - How can conflict result in either a positive or negative effect in society?

Conflict can result in a negative effect in society by causing the destruction of cities and the deaths of innocent people. This was seen in World War 2, the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima were bombed by the United States. It caused the destruction 70 percent of buildings from both cities and caused many innocent civilians to die. Aside from that it also caused a complete economic downfall. Although this bombing caused a negative effect in Japan's society, it also created positive effect. After Japan's surrender, they turned from a monarchy into a democracy in where their first free elections happened. Japan is a perfect example of how conflicts, while bad can cause both a positive and negative effect in society.

One conflict from the past that has a similarity to a conflict in the present is Germany's invasion of Poland and at present Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Both these conflicts involve two leaders who wish to expand their territory through invading a neighboring country. These conflicts were also a result of hungry for power leaders who under economic sanctions wished to revolt and rebel against the countries who sanctioned through invading a country and ignoring their warnings.

Artifact Four - Can conflicts be resolved, how can one view conflicts in society?

Based on our history, conflicts can in fact be resolved in one way or another. In World War 2, Japan's surrender to the allied forces marked the end of the world war and caused the conflict to be resolved. In World War 1, the treaty of versailles, marked the end of World War 1 which was a document that held Germany accountable for their actions. In this day and age, one can view past conflicts in our society as a reminder of the serious catastrophes that a conflict can cause. It also should be viewed by people now as a reason on why conflicts like wars should be avoided and why peace should be promoted.

Artifact Five - As young members of society, how can you contribute to addressing societal conflict at present based on the insights you gained in learning history?

As a young member of society I can contribute to this by raising awareness on the different conflicts happening in the world right now such as the war in ukraine. I can advocate about this by reposting awareness posts on social media that show the current situation for those affected by the conflict there. Another way is by actively joining protests that raise awareness and call to an end on the different conflicts happening in the world right now.

Even after acknowledging the casualties that past conflicts have produced, there are still people in the world who are willing to start wars. Knowing this, we should stay vigilant and support organizations who promote dialogue over violent conflict such as the UN in order to keep the peace we experience today and avoid another major conflicts such as the two world wars.
