Through our meaningful interactions, we can impart effective communication. Having good command of the language allows this to be done without the need for explicit planning and rather seize teachable moments. In this way, children will not only pick up how to communicate, but they can incorporate other components in conversations - how to communicate appropriately and effectively with others or how to bring our points across.

Based on the video, I agree with Professor Richards' view on grammar as a communicative resource. The purpose of using correct grammar is so that information can be communicated more accurately, e.g. the use of past tense. Thus as teachers we can pay attention to the information the children are communicating and help them recast their sentence according to the correct structure. We can also use our class writing as a way to reinforce grammar through helping the children recast their sentences.

Grammar is an important communicative resource as it allows ideas to be effectively conveyed across to another person, either verbally or in written format. There was once, a child who doesn’t have a strong background in English said “I want to eating bread”. This sentence can be perceived in 2 ways. 1) the child is eating bread, 2) the child wants to eat bread. This is an example of unclear communication as a result of ineffective use of grammar. Hence as teachers, modelling proper grammar when we speak and write exposes children to using grammatically correct sentences for communication. It is also essential for our daily communication with various stakeholders.

As much as we want to teach and proper grammar rules, sometimes I find that teaching our little ones grammar rules can be quite a difficult task. It's more than just the language on it's own. It is also how can we use it to help us better convey what we really mean. Rather than teaching the grammar rules, we should use grammar as a communicative resource in our conversations and help children better understand the context.

Without the use of proper grammar, the meaning of a sentence can be changed. Learning the rules of grammar is not easy but it is important for teachers to teach grammar through modelling of proper grammar and language. If children are using improper grammar, we can help them understand what their sentences mean and rephrase it for them. This helps children to learn the language in context and children get to hear and/or try to say the correct sentence.
