I moved to Vancouver from Alberta, and have lived here for almost exactly half of my life. It was quite an adjustment to go from living on a big ranch to living in a small apartment near UBC, but I have learned to love city life. I enjoy being able to walk everywhere!

But we also enjoy being really close to Commercial Drive where we can go out for any kind of food for a pretty reasonable price. Sushi!! ;)

This means that Vancouver was built upon acts that should have been considered injust. Injustince doesn't end as time goes by, but rather through reconciliation. That hasn't happened yet so there probably is still lots of discrimination happening around the topics mentioned because that is the culture that was brought into Vancouver.

The city has historically had heavy discrimination towards Asian communities, evident from the Japanese Internment Camps, the construction of the CPR, and the Georgia Viaduct. The Georgia Viaduct still stands today, and was built on top of Hogan's Alley, a primarily African Canadian community. We can still see many remnants of the city's history of discrimination today, contrasting the immense diversity of the city's population.

Acts of discrimination are seen from the earliest stages of Vancouver’s history and many of which are discrimination against people of asian descent. For example, Chinese immigrants were not given businesses, and Canada utilized exclusion laws to exclude immigrants from Asia despite welcoming thousands of immigrants from Europe. Japanese Canadian were also forced into internment camps in 1942, causing them to lose their jobs, properties, and businesses. There is still discrimination happening in the world today, so it is important for us to identify and take action in preventing them.

Specific events or moments that showed me this was throughout the Anti-Asian riots in the history of Vancouver where many Asian small businesses were broken into, stolen from, and damaged over a course of 2 days. We like to say that we have changed to this day, but the only change we have made to this discrimination is not being physical about it. For example, there is still a huge, constant problem of homelessness in Vancouver. Many people dislike the fact that they are in front of their favourite stores or a resturaunt they want to eat at, but that isn't the problem with homelessness. The problem is that they don't have any where to go.

Discrimination against minority groups has been evident throughout Vancouver's history. An example of this, was when Japanese Canadians were forced into internment camps, and later government camps, in 1942. They were not seen as loyal citizens of Canada, but foreign enemies who would attack the country. Much of Vancouver's development wouldn't have been possible if the minority ethnic groups did not help. In return for their diligence, they were treated unfairly and had their property destroyed for more advancements in the city. The discrimination and injustice years ago in Vancouver, continues to spill into present day. Although it may not be as blatant, it is an issue that we must all be aware of. In my opinion, educators and those in authority should inform and explain more about discrimination so communities will strive to take action. This certainly does not mean discrimination will suddenly vanish, but it will encourage generations to stay educated in these critical topics, recognize our own privilege, and to find justice by removing the barriers that prevent equity and equality in our society.

For the Japanese they lost their jobs and property because of the attack of Pearl Harbor and were separated from society because the government was afraid of a terrorist attack. As seen on the presentation, the deinstitulization of mental healthcare, is still very prominent in the present day. A lot of the poverty and drug usage in the Downtown Eastside, is caused by the lack of support they receive. Those struggling with their mental health may have resorted to drugs, which would lead to their addiction. Having better and more rehab and mental health centres would improve the overcrowding and homelessness on the Downtown Eastside.

I have lived in Vancouver my whole life and i feel very lucky and blessed to live in such a great city. My neighbourhood has always been very friendly and exploring new parts of the city grows my passion for certain things. I feel very blessed that Vancouver has a mild climate, although it rains a lot, and that we have fresh clean air.

I would first mention the beautiful beaches and mountains and tell them about all the wonderful activities we get to do at both. I would also mention about UBC and how near their is the Musqueam Indigenous group. I would finally mention all the outdoor activities we have like trails, bike paths, and many more.

Something that was new to me was learning about the Vancouver fire and how fast it burned down Vancouver. I also found it interesting that there is no treaty signed for the land of Vancouver with the Indigenous groups that were here first. We are essentially living on stolen land.

Discrimination is a huge part of Vancouvers history. We are on land that is stolen and there is a lot of discrimination against Indigenous people. As well I remember learning that there is a lot of discrimination against Asians, as many people came from Hong Kong in the 1970's.

I would change our cities wealth dynamics. There are many people living on the streets while Vancouver also has some of the riches people in the world. Finding a way to balance wealth and help the homeless is a huge thing and I think would be very beneficial for our city.
