The Electoral College uses a system of points (electoral votes) that are counted state by state.

Voters do not directly vote for the President directly. they are really voting for the electors of their state who will vote for the presidential candidate they represent.

The number of votes per state is dependent on the number of representatives they have in Congress. Each state has 2 electoral votes because each state has 2 senators. They also get one Electoral vote per Representative in the House. (the larger states, have more Electoral votes)

Maine and Nebraska can split the electoral votes. All other states have a winner take all approach.

To become President of the US, the candidate must win the absolute majority of the votes. they must get 270 electoral votes out of 538
